AfterShot Pro 2.0

Post by lundbech »

Corel has just announced on their facebook page, that ASP 2 will be released in less than a week.

So apparently they managed it after all. :D

Have they also announced that it will be a free update to all the users they abandoned/ignored for the last 2.5 years?

Have they also mentioned that once this product is released, there will be no more updates or announcements for the next three to four years, when they try to cash in on AfterShot Pro v3?

Everyone here isn't thrilled with the way ASP has evolved (myself included), but let's give Corel the benefit of the doubt and see what they come up with.

The problem is, it hasn't "evolved" at all. It is like that mosquito at the beginning of the movie "Jurassic Park". There might be some useful DNA within, but on the whole, its just unrealized potential.

I personally have moved on to a combination of ACDSee Pro 7 and PSP X6. I still own ASP and have it installed, but It won't support my Olympus E-M10, so it's really pretty useless to me. If Corel ever gets off its collective *** and releases a V2, I'll take a look, but they should NOT expect me to pay a premium to satisfy my curiosity and they need to offer some powerful reasons for me to change my workflow. That situation can be blamed on no one but Corel.

Tried ASP when it first came out. Liked it very, very much. Super easy to use for a beginner, did a nice job. Finally climbed enough of PSPx6's learning curve to use it fairly well. Like it very much but still prefer ASP's speed and ease of use. But the last ASP service pack made the WB go out of whack, so shopped for an alternative RAW processor. Tried Lightroom, didn't like it. Tried ACDSee Pro, liked it ok enough to buy it, but too much jumping from mode to mode and tab to tab then back to mode to mode -- not like ASP where everything you need or want to do is "right there." So I'm looking forward to ASPv2 and will buy it, even though I don't really need it now. If I find new version lacking, at least I have a decent fall back program.

I to will have a look. But it needs to be an improvement for me to come back.
My biggest issue with the current version is the WB. I use Nikon's NX-D and the WB from Nikon 'should' be correct. Compared to NX-D ASP is in another universe it's so far off.

Likewise, but I'll definitely give it a try when it comes out. That WB issue is annoying but fixable, the problem for me it's a better highlight recovery and support for Fuji X-Trans cameras.

I am hoping that the Lens corrections for my Panasonic G3 m4/3 are applied as per the info supplied in the raw file. The present processing by ASP is not useable. The other software that I use Lightroom, SilkyPix, Capture One Express and Qimage all do the necessary. This lens correction is necessary and normal , by design, for all the present mirror less cameras. Panasonic, Olympus, Fujifilm, Nikon 1, Pentax Q, Sony NEX to name a few of the major players in this market segment. If Corel wish to remain competitive in the supply of RAW image processing software then they need to step up to the plate.
Technology in processing raw digital files is changing rapidly and keeping pace is not a part time job.

Yes and no. While I would love to see ASP read the lens correction info from m4/3 raw files, I'd wish its application remains optional! There's plenty of pictures taken with my 17/1.8 lens where I prefer the (rather strong) uncorrected barrel distortion over the "fixed" look.

Well its out on the corel website. Downloaded it and initial impression is the images look quite good. Tried installing Wavelet sharpen plugin, installs but does not show up in Plugin list in Aftershot.

Came across this though ... "To re-activate a download version:
If you have reached your activation limit and want to install the software on a new computer, you will need to buy priority support. ($US 19 ) !!!! Basically the same price as an upgrade.

I have such trouble in the past with Corel programs with activation that this alone pretty muchkills the product for me. Computer crashes, change boot disk due to failure or change to an SSD etc etc or just new machine as I do at least once a year
and I am up for another $US19 again ... !!! Not acceptable charging at all !!

I gave up and on the Corel video program after numerous calls to support, and paintshop pro 5 has stopped working, asking for a new install ... cant be bothered anymore with arguing with the supplier when
I have legitimately bought both products. Will be extremely cautious with anything Corel from now on.

Re Aftershot pro previous version, I have had no troubles in a couple of years, maybe it will now start to fail as there is a new vers$ion ?

Again image quality initially looks quite good, but I now own a number of image editing programs and dont want any grief down the track ever again.

I am surprised to read that you couldn't see the Wavelet Sharpen plugin in your tabs. I took the bold step of allowing ASP2 to use the existing .AS directory on my laptop - it wouldn't have mattered had it trashed this installation of AS, as I do all my production work on another system. Anyway, all the existing plugins were recognised, and those I have tried in the 15 minutes since I finished installation work fine.

That pesky bug about White Balance has gone from the old version too. I can see myself upgrading ...

$80 to buy outright and they want $60 to upgrade from ASP v1?

Apparently Corel has spent the last two and a half years experimenting with mind altering drugs.

If they think anyone will upgrade at that price after the atrocious job they have done so far, they are in for a rude awakening.

I noticed their noise reduction is no longer called noise ninja. Instead it is "Perfectly Clear Noise Removal" with a few profiles using different "Strength" and "Detail". I wonder what it is using?

There is a "Local Contrast". I guess it is the new feature?

Lens Correction is same as before. i.e. none.

White balance is fixed. But NEX-3N RAW support is still broken.
