I can't tell you with 100% confidence since I've never used the V9 trial, but there isn't a version of V9 that doesn't support dual-layer DVD media, so I would expect the trial version to do that as well.
After you click on "Create Disk", press F6 to bring up the Project Settings. There you should be able to set the disk size to 8.5GB.
