Tracing from a photo in PSPx6?

Post by awm03 »

I'd like to make a mock-up of my family room for some renovations we're planning. What I'd like to do is, take a photo of the room, then in PSPx6, open the photo, place a white transparency on top of the photo, then draw the basic walls, windows, door openings & fireplace on the transparency. When finished, I would use the drawing as a basis for playing with interior design changes (colors, flooring, etc.). Can this be done? I figure if it can be done, it would be a lot easier than trying to learn Google Sketch-Up from scratch.
Thanks.

Add a New Raster Layer to the original image (in the Layers Palette) and draw lines on that.
To draw a straight line:
Paint Brush, on 2 or whatever width suits.
Start the line, say on the floor of the room, hold the Shift key and click where you want the line to end, this will give you a straight line.
Repeat as many times as necessary.

Attached is an alteration I did some time ago in our living room (changed the sofa), with added lines.

Oh I see! Good tip about how to draw straight lines. And when I'm through drawing, I use the Flood Fill tool to make the background white to get rid of the checkerboards, then delete the photo layer underneath, and save the raster layer. Thank you so much, Joelle. This will be very useful.

Don't make things so hard for yourself. You'll already have a photo, so why redraw everything? Use layers and Hue/Saturation masks to change the colours:
  • Use the Auto Selection tool in combination with the Smart Selection brush to select the areas for which you want to change to a specific colour.
  • Edit the selection if necessary to refine the selection.
  • Create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer, set to "Colorize", and modify its Saturation and Lightness settings to suit.
For example, given this original image:
living room 01.png
Steps 1-3 (for each item) will create the following layers:
living room 01 colorized layers.png
living room 01 colorized layers.png (16.58 KiB) Viewed 3149 times
And you can modify the colours to your heart's content, with the added advantage that the new colours will retain the shading of the original image:

Yes, I could manipulate the actual photos, but right now I've got crummy furniture, carpets, clutter & other extraneous stuff in sight. If I just draw the basic room outline, that "removes" the cr@p that we're getting rid of anyway and gets the gist of the room -- window placement, door placement, outlet placement, scale (the main thing). I can roughly paste in or draw in what we plan to do and get a good enough idea from that.
