Importing / Tagging / Keywords / IPTC Question

OK, so here's the question, it's all related, actually. Right now, my main "backup" for all things photography is via dual 4TB, Ethernet based HDD's on my network. My PC's connect to these things via wireless and the speed is, well, relatively slow, as my drives are upstairs, some 60+ feet away from the computers. That's not going to change any time soon. Because this is wireless, my throughput/performance is somewhat restricted and slow (around 20-30Mbps, max). It's OK for 99% of what I do. However, I need to manage my photos and, for that, I have some questions:

1) Can I download the photos off my camera memory cards to my LOCAL hard disk drive and then: A) Rename them (yes), B) Rate them (stars), C) Add tags, D) Add keywords, E) Update IPTC info (yes).
2) Then, can I copy these files, tagged, starred, keyworded, IPTC updated to the appropriate, cataloged, directory(s) on my remote HDD's and will Corel retain the tags, keywords and ratings??? I know that the name, obviously, is "hard coded" and the IPTC info is embedded but, as I understand it, the keywords / tags / ratings / etc are in the Corel database? How do I get those to "follow" the transfer of drives?

I'm asking this, largely, because the other day I selected a bunch of existing photos on the network hard drive and tried to update IPTC, tags, keywords and ratings... I'd click on a rating (say 4 stars) and then the thing would "churn" for about 20-seconds... then I could bring up the next photo, rate, churn, photo, rate, churn... it was laborious. The same went for mass IPTC changes. I would select all the photos of interest, type in my name, press return, get a cup of coffee, make breakfast, eat said breakfast, return and the name updates would just be finishing...

I thought that, maybe, this was a PC-centric issue. So, I grabbed my other PC, very close the router (144Mbps link, most of the time) and tried it there. Same result. Grabbed my wife's PC (third one), same thing... do this change on the local HDD and, wham, it's done almost before I release the "Enter" key and I can go on and make my next edit so... just wondering if that work can be done, locally.
