How to create leather background, stitch, and emboss effect?
One of the things I find most frustrating using PaintShop Pro (any version) is learning how to do a new type of effect. The main reason being is a combination of; incorrect keyword phrase and/or search term I used for desired effect, and/or the publish solution does not contain the same keyword phrase and/or search term for desired effect I used. The other reason, when I do find a published solution its usually for significantly older versions of PaintShop Pro -which discourages me from upgrading, in fact its the main reason why I don't upgrade until several versions later. So I will use a link to a visual example in case the I did not use the correct term.
Anyway, I wish to create my own leather background, with stitching, and emboss (here is an example http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-illust ... st=f7b80e3).
Thanking you in advance for your patience.

It's tricky to get the correct search terms.Corel Newbie wrote:One of the things I find most frustrating using PaintShop Pro (any version) is learning how to do a new type of effect. But "PaintShop Pro tutorials" is always a good start
I have had a try at leather stitching and this is what I have come up with.
To make the leather:
Fill an new image with the colour of the leather>Effects>Texture Effects>Fine Leather.
Experiment with the settings if you don't like the default.
For the stitching:
I have used an oblong with rounded edges on a transparent background and exported that as a Picture Tube.
File>Export>Picture Tube.
For the settings, see attached.
New Raster Layer, then start on the left and hold the Shift key to make a straight line of stitching.
If you are not familiar with the Layers Palette, the Help Files are there to help
Have fun
Joëlle You need to remove the white background: Right-click on the layer and select Promote Background Layer. Then select the white with the Magic Wand and hit Delete.
Then Export it as a Picture tube as described above. PS: Suz Shooks' place is a good site to find interesting Hints and Tips, plus scripts:
http://suzsplace.com/
Searching for PSP Scrapbooking sites should be helpful finding stitching.

Joelle,
That stitching looks really good. Add a little embossing to the stiches, and a sunken layer shadow and you'll really have something....

It's the NEWBIE part of the name that made me think that information was enough to start with

Yeah, I knew I'd have to put up or shut up....
So, here's my attempt: I never used Picture Tubes before, so it was a good learning experience. I see how they can be very useful.
PSP's layer styles leave a lot to be desired, but at a small scale the effect sort of works.

Re: How to create leather background, stitch, and emboss eff
Very nice, well done.
Layer Styles are not the best, but sometimes the Reflection setting is useful.
I always duplicate the layer if I am adding a Layer Style effect.
Picture Tubes are great fun and very handy.
I don't use the ones that come with PSP much, but have made many of my own over the years. The folder was getting a tad big, have culled a few..

Re: How to create leather background, stitch, and emboss eff
Joelle,
By the way, I think I created the stitch picture tube in a slightly different way than you did.
For the OP, my steps were these:
By the way, I think I created the stitch picture tube in a slightly different way than you did.
For the OP, my steps were these:
- Use the rectangle Preset Shape tool. First set the "Horizontal Radius" and "Vertical Radius" (in the Properties bar) to 10.
- Draw out a stitch so you get a nice shape.
- Rotate the shape slightly if you want.
- Apply a background colour and a texture background pattern (using the Materials Palette).
- With that entire vector group (containing the stitch) selected, use Edit...Copy. This eliminates any background -- the background comes in as transparent.
- Then use Edit...Paste As New Image to get only the stitch in the new image.
- Right-click on the vector layer (in the Layers Palette) and choose "Convert to Raster Layer".
- Use File...Export...Picture Tube to create the picture tube.

Re: How to create leather background, stitch, and emboss eff
Thank you all.
I was trying to create a background seamless texture image to be used on a new website as the background for global horizontal navigation bar, the brown leather strap with stitching portion was the effect perfect I was looking for.
I have already purchased the rights to use the image, would it better/easier to just select a sampling slice from said image and try to create a horizontal seamless textured tile? I have already tried, but there was nothing seamless with my failed end results?
Welcome any suggestions.
Thanks again!

Just copy your slice to the Clipboard and then paste it in as a new image. Then use Effects...Image Effects...Seamless Tiling.Corel Newbie wrote: I have already purchased the rights to use the image, would it better/easier to just select a sampling slice from said image and try to create a horizontal seamless textured tile? Tried it, but it did not come out seamless.
