cannot capture due to missing drivers

Post by MrPenny »

Describe your problem:
I am trying out VideoStudio X7, and run into the following error message, when trying to capture video:
This is the error message I get in VS X7
This is the error message I get in VS X7
What devices are involved and their mode of connection?:
I have a Sony DCR-PC100, connected to my computer via Firewire/iLink. The computer recognizes it in the "Devices and Printers" screen, as a "Sony AV/C Subunit"
This is the Device screen, showing the camcorder
This is the Device screen, showing the camcorder
I have checked the Sony website, and they do not provide any video drivers for this device. Any suggestions? I've searched the Web high and low, and haven't found a solution. Thanks.

Is your camera connected to the computer via a Firewire 1394 port, VSX7 will not find the camera if connected via USB
Sorry just noticed that you are connected via firewire.
Try connecting the camera to the computer and turn it on before you launch VSX7

DV/AVI, which is what your camera films, is normally one of the most stable formats around and it used to be easy to capture too. The Firewire drivers are in fact installed as part of Windows, not by Video Studio. But your current problem could be a conflict in VS over the introduction by Microsoft relatively recently of a new Firewire IEEE1394 driver. Usually, reinstalling a legacy firewire driver rectifies this problem. Here's the way to do it:

1- Open Device Manager.

2- Expand the "IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers" node in the device tree by double clicking.

3- Select the Driver tab and the click the Update driver button.

4- Select "Browse my computer for driver software"

5- Select "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer ..." and Check the box before “Show compatible hardware”.

6. Choose the second option--- "1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)", and click next to update the driver.

Hopefully, next time you open VS and have the camcorder connected via Firewire, you should now be able to "see" the camera identified in the Capture window.

I should have remembered that Ken, seeing as I had to change my firewire driver to the legacy driver

Thanks, guys - it's now working. In addition to switching to the legacy Firewire drivers, I also had to open Imaging Devices in Device Manager,
Imaging Devices.jpg
and select a driver for the camcorder... it gave me two options, both of which seem to work with X7. Thanks again.

You say you had to go into Imaging Devices on Device Manager - it doesn't show on my PC, how can I access it? Changing the firewire card to LEGACY hasn't allowed it to be seen (Win 7)

Thanks in advance

Do you have, on Device Manager, an entry for IEEE1394 Bus Host controllers?
