Title output quality increase?

Post by Troy at TheGTAMblog »

Perhaps there is something I'm not seeing/setting - and overall the quality of output isn't 'bad' - but after taking a still frame of a created Title composition in a Project, the captured frame (via Edit>Take A Snapshot) shows aliasing and other elements that degrade the quality/look of the created Text objects.

As an attempt at a workaround, I rendered out a few frames into a 4K resolution video and extracted a frame from that clip, but the aliasing and quality level is the same, so I assume it's not "Take A Snapshot" 'cutting corners' or something on the quality in the rendering.
I also tried to disable Hardware Acceleration for output/rendering, to see if that helps (as it usually did for video renders in the past); but it didn't make a difference and the aliasing is still there in the image extracted from the Project.

I downloaded the Trial of MotionStudio 3D, and I'm going to try re-create the Text as it appears in x7, and see if that renders out a higher-quality output for a still frame/image.

Just wondering if there's an option or something I'm missing in x7, when trying to capture an image/frame of what the created Title looks like, to increase the quality...

Were you in 'project' or 'clip' mode when you took the snapshot - 'project' uses the properties of the video - while 'clip' uses the clip and usually results in a much better picture.

Thank you for your reply, I'm sorry I took so long coming back, I did not receive a notification that there was a response for some reason.

In the Corel VSPx7 Trial, it seems only possible to "Take A Snapshot" in Project mode (it switches to Clip mode after taking the Snapshot, to show the 'media bin'), but one cannot take a snapshot in Clip mode (it is greyed out).

I am currently trying out the MotionStudio3D Trial, it's just too bad there was so much aliasing ("stair-stepping") on the Title text and objects in VSPx7. Where can one make a Suggestion to Corel to take a look at things like this? Is there a Suggestions forum or just something at the main Website?

I am not quite sure what the object of your exercise here is - do you want an image to use on a publication or something like that - in that case I would be making my title in an external image manipulation programme and printing from that - and putting the image into VideoStudio to use as a title there.

If you are 'taking a snapshot' before any rendering in VS then I am not sure where the aliasing is coming from - but do remember that in photographic terms a video image is quite small - even at HD of say 1980 x 1080 is not up to a standard digital camera.

The trial version of X7 is a full and complete working programme - missing only a few bonus additions (videos, images. filters etc) and you should be able to take a snapshot in 'clip' mode - are you making sure the clip/title you are trying to copy is selected (has yellow lines all round it) when trying to use clip mode.

The only place Corel *might* listen to any suggestions you may have is here :- https://www.facebook.com/corelvideostudio?fref=ts

Thank you for the information

Apparently, "Take A Snapshot" (under the Edit pulldown menu) is not available in Clip mode, only in Project mode [See attached screenshot]
vspx7, clip mode, Take a Snapshot not available, material has aliasing
vspx7, clip mode, Take a Snapshot not available, material has aliasing
The aliasing in the Title object (a preset that had an oblong sphere in it) is visible as well.
I even rendered out a 4K video of just the text and sphere (preset Title) and extracted a frame from that, and the aliasing in the Title was still present.

Now that I think of it, perhaps the aliasing is part of the object itself (in the preset), because any text/letters that are placed in front also have aliasing. Perhaps it is not rendering the letters and objects dynamically, it is merely displaying premade vector objects (which have some aliasing in them).

Keep trying Troy, I certainly can take a snapshot in clip mode, if "take a snapshot" is not highlighted I just move the scrubber back and forth, then "take a Snapshot" is highlighted.

Moving the Scrubber in the Preview area did not help, unfortunately. I even tried going frame-by-frame through the Title... Using the scrubber on the Timeline made the "Take A Snapshot" become available, but that was because it had actually changed into Project mode  (Project becomes lit up once you touch the scrubber in the Timeline)

Thank you for your input though, Robert!

A little experimentation has taught me something new - you learn something new everyday - even when you've passed your '3 score and ten'

Take a snapshot is not available in 'clip' mode if the clip is a title or a still image only on a video !

I suppose I hadn't noticed before because I have never tried to snapshot a title - only to get stills from a video.
