We want to paint our kitchen cabinets. They are currently stained. If I take a photo of them and then bring it into PSP and use the floodfill tool to see what they would look like a different color it is all streaky because of shadows and all.
Is there a way to see what they would look like a different color using a PSP technique?
(I have a very limited knowledge of layers)
Thanks,
Allen

I would start by selecting the cabinets with the Magic Wand. The tolerance level will determine the sensitivity of the selection to adjacent similar colors.
Once the cabinets have been fully selected using this method, open the Adjust menu.
Select Hue and Saturation -> Colorize. Change the Hue to examine colors and Saturation to examine richness of that color.
In that Colorize window, be sure "Preview on Image" is checked.

Re: how to change color of cabinets in a house
To start you may need to use the selection tools to reduce the area affected by the colour changing - depends on whether adjacent colours are the same. Also, play with tolerances when you use the tools.
After selecting the colour try the color changer tool (under the flood fill). After selecting the tool go to the Learning Center palette and it will provide instructions on how to use this tool. I keep he learning center pinned at the side so that it is activated when I hover over it so it is always available to remind me how to use a tool.
Another tool is the color replacer tool (in the list just below the paintbrush) but for your purposes I think this one is not as good as the other.
