Joining HD and non HD video

I have tried multiple times to insert a section of non HD video into an HD video using VS5. I looks like it is working and starts processing it into a movie. But eventually it stops and says there is a problem.I have even used other video converter programs to convert all the file into various other formats and then tried joining what looked like identical types of files. Still no go. The I switched to my Mac and tried IMovie. In that case it looked like it worked but on playback it would play for awhile and then freeze. Has anyone ever successfully joined HD and non HD clips

Yep, done it loads of times.
What are all of your file types, right click on them while on the VS timeline and copy the info.
What are your project settings?
What are your output settings?
