Transferring libraries from older to new versions

Transferring libraries from older to new versions
Hi. My second post here. I just upgraded from Corel Video Pro X6 to X7. The previous project I was working on with X6 was easily opened with 7 and I can continue to work on it. However, all the folders I had set up within X6 remain on X6 (photo folders, music folders, etc). Is there a way to transfer my folders over to x7 short of having to upload everything all over again from my PC? Thanks. Frank

Re: Transferring X6 library folders to X7
In X6 go to "Settings >> Library manager >> Export Library " - in the dialogue window choose which folder to save it in and OK
open X7 and go to "Settings >> Library Manager >> Import Libray" - browse to the folder you selected above - select it and OK.

Re: Transferring X6 library folders to X7
Hi Frank / Brian
Well I have to disagree there may be some problems that may affect the library content, in principle it should work but……….
In exporting X6 library to X7 you are also exporting the programs samples.
Certainly your personal library pages should be ok.
The program samples however including the graphics section will be replaced with the X6 versions.
X7 has changed quite a lot from X6, effectively you will loose all new samples especially the graphics section.
Additionally the files locations may be in a different place on the hard drive causing some / a lot re-link issues.
64 bit re 32 Bit versions will cause some problems.
Other problems of re-linking to the wrong VS version may also be a problem, as seen in earlier versions by some users.
I have just tried this and I get many problems.
Certainly try it, you can always revert X7 library back to its default state using the Library Managers Reset option.
But I would give it a miss and import your clips manually.
Having said that it may be possible ( may be possible ??) to copy the appropriate folder from X6 to X7 but although worked for earlier versions VS10, it was a problem for the later versions (X3 onwards) with the newer library structure.

So - you seem to be saying Trevor that it is not possible to transfer libraries from one version to the next - and if you do try it you will find a lot of problems and loose a lot of supplied samples - so that Frank (and everyone else upgrading) should re-create all their libraries manually one at a time.

Re: Transferring X6 library folders to X7
Hi Brian
Yep,
Video Studio X7 has had its library enhanced unlike the previous versions that stayed the same, so copying X4, X5 to X6 was probably possible. Although we know that transferring the libraries has always been a hassle.
So if you copy the entire X6 library then you loose all X7 new libraries.
You also get re-link requests.
Some requests that I had pointed to X4 and X2 clearly a problem there. ( we have seen that before??)
Then there is the 32 bit X6 to 64 Bit X7 to consider another stumbling block.
Besides you cannot uninstall X6 as X7 is now using the library files of X6
If you have X6 installed you can try yourselves, first make a backup of the X6 and X7 library.
You can always return to using those later

Re: Transferring X6 library folders to X7
Hi all and thanks for the replies. I don't want to 'screw it up' so I will manually re-add all my photos and clips.
Perhaps Corel should make a patch for this or write this into the next upgrade. Eg, when you download or upgrade a web browser, typically you get a window that opens and asks "would you like to transfer your bookmarks?". Corel should allow you to transfer your libraries. I was getting a lot of errors with X6 and getting crashes. In fact, I upgraded to X7 because a project I was working on for 2 months suddenly wouldn't open and I was getting a 'send a dump file' error message. I'm hoping that the 64 bit (I run Windows 8 ) will alleviate this problem since I can now continue on my video since I've upgraded. I just don't have my libraries.

Re: Transferring X6 library folders to X7
Trevor,
Sorry to hi-jack this post, but it is related to a question I was planning to ask. I'm currently using X5 Pro, and I'm planning to install X7 Ultimate soon. In planning for what has to be done to move things I created in X5 to X7 I was going to ask if I would have to rebuild my Instant Projects in order to take advantage of 64 bit in X7 or make them work because of 64 bit X7. From what I understand in this post, I will have to recreate my Instant Projects and also Titles, audio files, etc. in X7. Is this correct?
Gary

Re: Transferring X6 library folders to X7
Hi Gary
You should be ok……….
Instant projects use the same folder, downloading one to X5 will show when using X6 and X7
C:\Users\User Name\Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\VSPTemplate
Titles and Audio files are in a different location and may require moving, however audio files are probably the same for all versions.
Extra Title packs can be downloaded and installed to X7.
But you can check on that after installing X7

Re: Transferring X6 library folders to X7
Gentlemen, I have a huge library of images and music in X6, and wish to upgrade to X7. if I understand correctly, you're saying that it's best for me to wait for a patch to be issued that will remedy this problem. But... is that really likely to happen? I mean hasn't this been a problem for years? And now were looking at Corel's 64 bit highly advanced X7, and this "old problem" still has not been properly corrected? That's enough to make me stay with X6. Regards, Mike

Re: Transferring X6 library folders to X7
Hi Mike
Your best option is to transfer the library manually.
X6 for each user library folder, select all content and insert to timeline.
Save the project giving it a suitable name.
Do that for all user library folders, you will have one project for each library folder.
Open each VSP in X7 and drag content to library, create a new library folder first.

Re: Transferring X6 library folders to X7
Thanks Trevor,
Your right. And like you, I also had to do it manually in previous years. Do you think Corel's getting the message. There's must be a legion of people out there like you and I, who for lack of time and while in the middle of our projects, may not want an X7 upgrade that still requires a time consuming transfer of our library media folders. I mean, isn't that what "upgrade" is all about... to make things easier and faster? At the same time, its fair to say that, in other ways, Corel has been listening. And because they've been listening, they've put together... in my opinion, one of the best and most stable video editing software's on the market. All my best, Mike

Re: Transferring X6 library folders to X7
Hi Mike
Yes Corel are listening although the fix seems to be slow.
Today I mailed our contact at Corel suggesting they import/export only user customised library pages, that would overcome the samples problems, and any 64 bit 32 bit files issues.
There reply was:-
“We are discussing about X8 features and this issue is also one of our items.”
So they do know your feelings………….
I replied asking they provide a patch for X7. (no response from Corel)
As for my use of the library, for me it’s a temporary place to hold my clips, usually for the ongoing projects, but I have no problems in deleting all clips, in fact helping out on the forum sometimes populates my library with a load of junk.
I ran a few tests today, trying to import X6 which does work (sometimes) for the user folders but messes up the Samples, X7 has been updated quite a lot, first time a library has changed in quite a while.
I then tried to import my saved X7 library and received an error, so I had lost that anyway, didn’t understand why I had that problem.
I am sure things will improve, its just when???

Re: Transferring X6 library folders to X7
Hi Trevor,
Glad my comment was useful. I just ordered on Amazon X7 Ultimate after all. I'm trusting I can do the library transfer manually. With all its imperfections... a reminder of our fraility, today's technology keeps improving. May my life and it's projects do the same. Thanks for being there with a helping hand. All my best, Mike

Re: Transferring X6 library folders to X7
Hi Mike
If you wished to test the process of transferring the libraries you should have installed the trial version, as far as I know is a cut down version but fully functioning.
Good luck with the new program, I'm sure it will be fine

Thanks Trevor,
If the manual transferring of my library does not work out I'll be sure to let you know. The remedy you recommended Corel made good sense. Take care, Mike
