PSP X6 won't start. Please help.

Post by Tim McQuade »

I started getting an error message that Corel Paintshop Pro stopped working and will shut down. I uninstalled it (see my other post) and reinstalled. Now when I start PSP I see the initial screen that reports that commands are loading etc. When this screen goes away nothing happens. The program doesn't run at all.

Please help. Thanks in advance.

flagpole,
Thanks for the tip but still no luck. I also tried using the "Restore Database" utility. Now when I try to start PSP absolutely nothing happens.

Tim:

Have you tried uninstalling as suggested here . . http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=52337? Consider what backup you may want to do in advance.
Forriner beat me to it in the other post.

I used that uninstall utility to fix the "setup.xml" not loading problem. I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times. After reinstalling PSP works for a couple of minutes and then I get the "Paintshop has stopped working" error message". Windows says it's searching for a solution and then tells me the program must close. When I restart PSP the stopped working message appears immediately.

Thanks for your suggestion.

I have the same problem. The first two or three times I used the program it was fine. Now, as soon as the program gets to the point of initializing palettes, it crashes with the error notification that Paint Shop Pro has stopped working.

I have tried:

- Clean up, using the tools provided in this forum, then reboot then clean reinstall;
- Creating a new Administrator account for a new install (despite the fact that my own user account is set as Administrator anyway);
- Restoring database;
- Shift starting the program;
- Renaming the local appdata file.

None of the above worked. All resulted in the same crash and error. I couldn't even get to restoring the database, as this needs first to start the program and it crashed as usual before it could.

I'd be grateful for any and all advice, as this is very frustrating and putting me severely behind work schedule. Thanks.

As indicated before this worked for me a couple of times. Then started to crash again.
It may be a coincidence but I have a feeling that the crashes are associated with the plug-in "Topaz Simplify". Once removed the application seems to start properly.
Any idea?
Alex

Additionally I noticed that after some of the crashes the Topaz Simplify plug-in disappeared from the Effects menu, which supports the claim that the crashes are related to the plug-in.
Furthermore, one re-defining the file location for the plug-in the trouble came again to life.

I think this may be the answer to a lot of crashes. Go back to simple. Remove (to another folder ) any new add ons, go back to just what came with the program. Then slowly add your different colections, and plug ins to find out when and what causes your crashes.
My X4 was very stable, then I did some tutorials which required addition of some picture tubes and some plugin filters and accasionally I get the program refusing to start, and requiring 2 or 3 attempts before it works.
Meanwhile another installation under win 7 with no extra plug ins and added extras works perfectly.
