Notify me . . . doesn't

Post by Davidk »

The weekend of 12/13 April 2014 was marked by the frenzy of administrators patching servers for the heartbleed bug, with all the consequent 'slow as a wet week' performance particularly (experimental evidence) for users connecting to sites using a mirror network like cdn. And ever since then on this forum the 'notify me when a reply is posted' tick box below each subject panel hasn't worked (for me), at least in the video studio sub-forum. I've made a few entries and on later visit noted that on some but not all there had been replies that went un-notified. There's also a passing reference between 2 of the administrators that suggests there's a known issue with reply notifications since last weekend.

Is there any clarification available on this?

It has not worked for any one for over a week now - we have repeatedly requested Corel to rectify the situation - no automatic e-mails of any kind are being sent out - the admin team are having to manually e-mail all new members to get them activated - but we are not going to do it for post notifications.

despite our urging we have received no help from Corel.

Notifications were already missing a week before the "Heartbleed" panic and administrators patching has nothing to do with it.

Fair points. I had noted the response issue some days ago, but occasionally I forget to tick the notify box on posts, so my 1st reaction was mea culpa. It wasn't until a whole range of other websites I go to - like banks, cnn, and others - started 'not responding' last weekend that I connected the dots as it were. And noting a repetition of the 'waiting for cdn.xxx' in the bottom LH pane of the browser for quite a few sites, I looked cdn up on wikipedia, which still worked. And heartbleed has been getting a lot of tech press for a while now, and unlike most issues this one directly affects network servers, even if the impact is a user thing. Most sysadmins try to do maintenance on a Sunday, but if its zero day issue (as heartbleed is) some patch immediately.

At least this no notify thing is a known server issue even if corel haven't read their mail yet.

It would appear that the forum e-mail system is now working normally - notifications are being sent out.
