VS Pro X7 - Install BOTH 32 and 64 bit?

Post by David Ellis »

Hi all,

Just bought VS Pro X7 (box version with DVD) - inserted the installation disk and on the menu it lists:
Install Prox X7 32 bit
Install Prox X7 64 bit
Install Utilities
Browse Disk
Exit

I wasn't sure if you needed to install the 32 bit version AND the 64 bit version in that order, or only the 64 bit version?

I clicked on the 64 bit version...computer ran installation for about 5 minutes then came up with an error saying the installation hadn't been completed (not the exact words but I didn't write down the message).

Can anyone advise on the correct procedure please...the manual just says insert the disk and follow the instructions...but there weren't any!

Cheers.

David.

Just to clarify...I am running Windows 7 64bit version

Do I need to uninstall my old Pro X2 software before installing Pro X7...just wondered if that was an issue?

Thanks.

Hi David

You do not need to uninstall X2.

Did you install the trial version of X7, you should uninstall that before installing the disc version.

Where did you purchase the disc version.?

I know Corel released out the download version and were slow in making the disc version available.
I looked at the Corel site and it only showed the download available.?????

64 and 32 bit versions.
You can only install one program at a time, the same serial number will activate both.
Some Newblue plugins do not work with 64 bit, so you may have to use 32 bit till they fix that, then install 64 bit.

Any version 64 or 32 bit should install ok.

It would be useful to know the exact wording of the error message you received when installation failed. I get the same problem when trying to install X7 64 bit on my own Win 7 64 bit, when the installation reaches 37%. The error message I get is to the effect that the 64 bit service to activate Protexis cannot be activated and it offers to Retry, Skip or Abort. In any case, if I choose either Retry or Skip, it still comes back with the same message so the only choice is to abort. This has happened several times on the same computer, as I had eventually successfully installed X7 but later, for other reasons, had to uninstall and reinstall.

What you might need to try is to reboot your computer and try installing X7 immediately after the computer starts and before opening any other program. That always works for me.

As a footnote, Protexis is the licensing system Corel uses for its programs. It is a "stealth" program, installed without the user's knowledge, and checks the validity of the program. Unfortunately, unless it is running in the background, the main program will not work, but it otherwise does not appear to cause any problems.

Another footnote relates to Trevor's reference to NewBlue effects not working in the 64 bit version. X7 Ultimate comes with quite a few NewBlue effects, and they all work in X7 64 bit since they were tweaked to do so. The effects Trevor was referring to are the various stand-alone (i.e. purchased separately from New Blue) NewBlue Video Essentials packs which so far only come in 32 bit versions. New Blue say they are working on a fix for those of us who have purchased any of these packs.

Many thanks both.

Just to clarify - I did not install any trial version of X7...I have only got X2 installed on my PC.
The box version of Pro X7 was purchased via Amazon.co.uk

Not really sure about the Newblue plugins...not sure what they are and probably won't be using them if I did. Only have Pro version, not ultimate version.

I have tried reinstalling again, with the same problem...installation goes through checking Microsoft Visual C++ and then DirectX, and then fails. Error message says 'Installation wizard not completed. To complete installation at another time please run setup again. Click finish to end the wizard' and there is a '-9' shown below that...no idea what that means! At the same time as the installation stops, my anti-virus flags a warning that three suspicious files have been blocked (this may be linked to the failed install) - The file being blocked is Infinst.exe - blocked as it is reported that it is attempting to modify a protected system setting.

I have attached a screen shot which shows the error and part of the virus alert...files have been quarantined. Does anyone know if this file is safe in attempting to change the system settings? Perhaps I should disable the anti-virus software and run again...wasn't expecting any suspicious files to be reported from a commercial software disk...don't recall ever seeing that before.

Any ideas? Thanks.

You have a very aggressive anti virus, there is nothing in VSX7 which warrants a virus alert. Try again, but first disable your anti virus and fire wall, then run as administrator, after installation re-enable your anti virus and fire wall.

Hi

Well yes quite aggressive, to the bottom right the Bullguard gives the option to Ignore, you could try that.

I am sure the discs will be ok, but I still cannot find where Corel are selling the disc versions from their site?

Personally I would re-install another Virus program, “avast “ is free and quite good.
If that shows a warning?????

The Mini Box is what I bought (frustratingly the price has dropped £5 since I bought mine just two weeks ago - but that's not untypical with Amazon...prices fluctuate wildly).

The Mini Box simply contains a DVD (and serial number) and a leaflet that explains where to download the manual...that's it really.

I will try to reinstall the software with the anti-virus disabled...just wanted to make sure that there wasn't anything risky about the exe file it was flagging up...I guess nobody else has had any problems with it, so will try that and see what happens.

Many thanks for the feedback.

Just a short update...disabled the anti-virus function of my security software and tried to install the 64-bit version...and it worked - installation completed successfully! :D

Many thanks for the assistance.

I have just opened up the software for the first time and was able to read in some of my Pro X2 projects including one that was a work in progress...and it appears to have saved all the trims and edits I did under X2 before it started to crash on me, so I think it has all worked out nicely.

It's a shame that software suppliers don't include a physical manual in the box like they used to...it was always helpful to have the manual out on the desk when using the software for the first few times...but if the software is only on the computer you can't read that and use the software at the same time...they really didn't think of the practicalities, did they!

Anyway, software installed...now time to play!

Hi David

Video Studio now gives the option to Minimise (restore) the workstation in the same way as any other window. (Top right) ( - = X)
Drag the panel to one side (resize by dragging top and right corner) and then open the PDF on the other.

Video Studio may be a little small but should help when reading the PDF, depends on the size of your monitor?
