Importing gradients

Post by Cassel »

Checking the Help file for PSPX6, it states that to import gradients (.grd files) one has simply to "IMPORT" them and they work. However, I tried, and it does not always work as intended.

As an example, the gradients from here imported fine (but the names are in foreign language):

However, those from this page, won't import:

Now, I am wondering if some .grd files might include extra data that might not be importable in PSP and would cause an error?

FWIW, I get the same as you with an error message stating "There is a problem opening the currently selected gradient file." The others all open fine -- albeit with Chinese characters for the names followed by sequential numbers. You can, of course, rename these in the Gradients Editor.

Same results here and what's even stranger is that I downloaded another file that contained both .grd and .pspgradient files and PSPX6 imported the .grd files with no problem but couldn't even see the .pspgradient files. I even tried copying and pasting the .pspgradient files into my gradient folder and it didn't work.

Do the gradient files have a smoothness value added? Technically I'd imagine PSP would just ignore that value, but curious.

The other thing is that what appears as one gradient file from Photoshop, is actually a package of gradients which Photoshop can separate and use separately.
When you try Edit > Import from the Gradient Materials properties dialogs, the first gradient I tried from that Deviant art site Emerald Dragon had 30 dradients included. I was told that other gradients had the same name and had to rename. This finished up renaming the first gradient from that package, but the other 29 still had the foreign character symbol and would need to be renamed. In Photoshop they were named ES Emerald Dragon 01 ... 30

Not exactly sure what I did differently, but..... downloaded both zip files and unzipped the gradient files into the gradient folders for PSP. Imported each gradient file (ie, each of the 5 files which contain multiple gradients) one at a time. After I imported a file (so now I have say 15 gradients with Chinese characters), I renamed them in the folder by selecting all of the new ones (hence the reason I imported each file one at a time) and used the rename command...... then they will be renamed something like Autumn (1), Autumn (2) etc. etc. (I think that is much faster than renaming each file manually) I didn't do the pink file, but I have realistic sky, autumn, Rivendell and sea dreams. After I reopened PSP, they seemed to work ok.
Adverts for Corel products when you close PSP don't bother me.
