What is Shift A doing?

Post by robeffy »

Hi,
I am renaming my subdirectories in the Manage module, ie 2014 02 14 Anvil as an example.

Whenever I press the Shift A keystroke combination to get a Capital A, I get kicked out of Rename Subdirectory and my screen changes to either lose or gain the COREL PAINTSHOP PRO X6 banner on the top of the screen.

I can make this happen at any time by holding SHIFT and pressing A?

Ideas on this weird behaviour?

Thanks.

Shift + A <- Keyboard combination for full Screen. Though it shouldn't be activating while you're editing text.

One way to fix it is to remove the shortcut key combination from PSP.

Starting in the View menu

1) View ->Customize

2) Select the "Keyboard" tab.

3) Select "View" from the category drop down and select "Full Screen Mode" from the list of commands.

4) Select "Shift + A" in the current Keys box

5) Hit the "Remove" button to unassign Shift + A from the full screen mode command. This should stop the issue you're seeing.

Hi LeviFiction,

I really appreciate your reply, and apologize for being so tardy in not trying this technique. I was creating and just taught a Basic Camera Orientation, covering Fstop, Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO and how it relates to the camera technology, current and old school. Been busy.
I tried to use your approach, which worked fine for EDIT mode, however, in both the MANAGE and ADJUST mode I realized I can not get the Customize menu to appear, other than greyed out. How weird is that? ( I am not a fan of the TV show, but I have seen it ).

So, now I wonder why I can not see some of the menus in Manage and Adjust. I am also often unable to get the software to stop acting on the last command. IE, if I am crop I am stuck on crop until I select another command from the menus. Hitting ESC does not cancel me out of crop. This does not seem right to me, but I am a new user. I was previously using Elements, and decided to try PSP X6.

Wonder if my wireless keyboard is part of the problem?

Hi robeffy,

I'm speaking for X4 but shift-A has always been the combination, in Edit screen, for 'full screen edit', and ctrl-shift-A for full screen preview. In X4 it removes the top bar with Manage, Adjust and Edit tabs, and the bottom status bar, while in Edit screen. Otherwise, in other tabs, it does nothing, even while changing a folder name in Manager, where it types a capital A.

I hadn't noticed it before, but the shift-A option for editing isn't in the View menu where it was in previous versions, but it still works for me.

Have you tried "restoring PSP to its default state"? Press and hold a shift key while clicking on the shortcut to start PSP. You'll get the question if you want to restore, click Yes. This will configure PSP as it was after installation, and should reset that shift-A problem if it's a PSP problem.

Thank you all for your replies.

My menu options are only available in the Edit Menu. I suspect that my PC and this software are not compatible.

I am also disappointed to find no simple way to create a slideshow. I am supposed to link pictures to a map, and create HTML links to web programs. What about simply pressing F11? What is all this complexity in aid of?

I am a former Photoshop Elements 6 user, and regret my decision to buy this software.

The Photoshop Elements interface for organizing pictures is much better, slideshows are better, I don't have issues with not being to change shortcut mappings, I don't get constant pop ups after closing my program.
