Too many brushes?

Post by tsteele93 »

I spent last week trying to import as many brushes as possible into PSPX6 64 and it began to flake out on me. I would load the program and I would get a lot of "hourglass" like (little blue spinning circle actually) cursor activity and when I loaded a picture it would work erratically for a little bit, then crash. It was essentially unusable. I completely un-installed (I was having trouble installing SP2 as well, but don't tell anyone!) and reinstalled from CD, then let it update via the automatic prompts and I am now running SP2. I haven't started to try and re-import the brushes because it was a LOT of work and I don't want to re-install several hundred brushes and have it crash again.

I have searched extensively for any indication that others have encountered this and so far no luck. Searches for "paint shop pro too many brushes" or "how many brushes can you have with paint shop pro x6?" yielded nothing. "Maximum number of brushes in paint shop pro x6" also came up with nothing.

So... does anyone here have a huge number of brushes imported into PSPX6 and it is working fine? Or is there a known limit or common sense general knowledge that the more brushes you add to PSP the slower it gets?

Also, while I'm on the subject, is there a way to organize the brushes as you add them? Perhaps a way to NOT load them all at startup or only load certain ones most of the time, then add others if you need them? Other than using the OS to create a bunch of different folders and only going in and enabling different brush folders as you need them? That would work, but it seems like the software might have a more elegant solution.

Thanks in advance!

Yes there is a way: store your supplies OUTSIDE of the PSP default folders, and use subfolders for different types (like Christmas brushes, Easter brushes, grungy brushes, etc.). Then, using the File > Preferences > File location, you can select some subfolders to be "loaded" (if you want to call it loading) only.

Thank you Cassell for a good explanation - so easy to follow.
Is there a way to create more than 1 subfolder in a folder ?
For ex.
Brushes > Winter and then in Winter subfolders for ex. snowflakes, snowman, snow and so on

You can with Picture Tubes so I assume the same is true for brushes. Just create subfolders and PSP will see them as separate from the main folder that they're inside of. For example, I've got a tube folder called "Christmas" and inside that I've got one called Christmas Bows. When I click the Category drop-down list for the tubes, I see both folders in the list.

I tried to do so in brushes but the third sub does not show up.
For ex. My Brushes > Christmas > Bows

PSPX5 ultimate
