Newbie problem = can't import .mts files

Post by ghijohansson »

My new Canon XA10 arrived. So I downloaded the trial version of Corel Videostudio Pro X7.

I can't import the .mts files from the camcorder. I mean, Corel crashes if I import those files.

When I checked on the internet I had the impression that Corel has been slow to give support to .mts files.

But on the other hand, Corel tells in their ads that they support AVCHD 2.0 up to a bit rate of 28 Mbit/s.

Here comes a little more info.

The files are in 24 Mbit/s PAL 1920*1080 50i. All files are 10-100 Megabytes each.

I also have Windows MovieMaker on my laptop. That program has no problem playing the .mts files. And the trial version of Videostudio can play another HD file.

If Corel does not support the video format I use, then I download some other software. At least Cyberlink, AVS and Magix support import of .mts files while Adobe Premiere Elemsnts sometimes has problems.

VS has no problems with mts files.

You should not import the video files from the camcorder. Simply use Windows Explorer and then copy the files from the camcorder to your hard drive. You then insert those files into your project.

I don't understand.

I have tried both methods.

I installed the Transfer Utility from Canon, and I have also drag dropped the files from the camcorder to my hard drive on the laptop. In both cases Windows tells that the files are .mts files, The only difference is that the names for the files differ.

After reading your answer I also tried to drag drop the files from the camcorder to Corel, but that also failed.

So please tell what I misunderstand.

Hi

How are you inserting the files to Video Studio.?

After you have imported the clips to your hard drive, right click the timeline and choose Insert Video.
Browse your pc for your files, does that work.?

If not, can you make one of your files available for download so we can check the clips on our pc’s.
Use a free sharing site?

I use Panasonic AVCHD to same/similar properties as you show with no problems.

Another user here :- http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=53210 with an identical sounding problem solved it by updating his video card driver - perhaps you could try that.

many of us edit .mts files so it is possible in VS

Hi

I have downloaded only one which seems to indicate it will be deleted after 2 hours at 13:01 hrs, so can download till then??

I have not had any problems with this file, at least so far I can open and play in X7, I am able to access the Share Tab and choose render properties. I have not had any crashes.
The properties using Video Studio show as:-

MPEG Transport-Stream Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 25 fps
Upper Field First
(HDMV-PAL), 16:9
H.264 Video
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 22700 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

Same as my files with the exception of 16800 kbps for the data rate.

I do have Show Messages when inserting first clip selected (F6--Preferences)
This matched the video files to the project properties, maybe you should try that option.
Add a video Click Details in the popup window to view your video files properties.

After reading what you wrote, I added "show messages", but the result is the same. Corel crashes.

Alright, I will record some footage with lower bitrate, later today.

And I have noticed one thing. Among the options for sharing, the video format I use is not included. I mean, it is not among the alternatives for AVC/H.264. Included is 18 Mbit/s, with the same frame rate and resolution as I use. 24 Mbit/s is instead supported for 24p, while I record 50i.

I changed the project properties, to a maximum data rate of 25 Mbit/s. Continues to crash, both with 25 and 50 frames per second.

Hi

Corel Video Studio cannot create every template but you can create your own to match your video file.
AVC/H264 -- + for Create Custom Profile

I tend to use Share - Same as First Video file, option at top of window, defaults to Same as Project Settings

Otherwise use Settings – Movie Profile Manager – AVCH264 – ADD – browse for your file and give it a name.
The template will be available from Share AVCHD – Profile list

Recording to a lower data rate may not fix the problem , I don't have a problem with your files.

I know Corel do recommend installing K-Lite a codec pack, I know a lot of people do not recommend this, but I think the pack has improved over the years.
I have installed with no problems.

Video files from a Digital Camera or Digital Camcorder will not import for editing in VideoStudio

Can you upload to a more useful site?

Thanks for reminding me about the codec package. Yes, I have noticed that some people say the package includes malware.

I recorded with 17, 12, 7 respectively 5 Mbit/s. Videostudio crashed, but more slowly.

Do the rest of you also use version 7? Or do you still use version 6 of Videostudio? Since version 7 has only been available for a few weeks, few have had time to purchase it, and Corel did rewrite the code from partly 32 bit to all as 64 bit. So I thought some mistake may have occurred.

About uploading to another site. Which one do you suggest? The one I use has the advantage that one does not need to create an account. One can use it without login.
