Change assigned Hotkeys for Cut,Copy,Paste?

Post by pstein »

As I found out PSP (at least version X2) does NOT use the common hotkey assignments for Cut,Copy,Paste.

Instead of using the well known hotkeys Ctrl X, Ctrl C, Ctrl V as they are listed e.g. here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cut,_copy,_and_paste

(see section Common keyboard shortcuts) PSP X2 uses others and I am always confused with that when switching from one application to other during workflow.

This is annoying.

Can I somehow assign different hotkeys to Copy,Cut,paste in PSP X2?

I did not found any corresponding preferences tab.

Under the View menu.

View -> Customize

A dialog will pop up and under the keyboard tab you will be able to select any command you want to setup a keyboard shortcut for. You will have to remove keyboard shortcuts that are already assigned elsewhere before assigning them to the command.

So you can set the keyboard shortcuts to whatever you want.
---
However, PSP does use Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V, and Ctrl + X for the standard Copy, Paste, and Cut. They just also happen to use a lot of others.

Ctrl + Insert is Copy, Shift + Delete is Cut. And of course Pasting has lots of different pasting options. Pasting as new layer is Ctrl + V. Pasting as a new image is Ctrl + Shift + V, or Shift + Insert.

At least that's how it is by default in my copy of PSP. As well as every copy I've ever owned.

I am running X2 and have two images open on the desktop. If I make a point to point selection on one image, I can use Control C and then Control V on the other image pastes a copy there. If I use Control X that removes the selected part and leaves a background color in its paste.
So Control C,control V and Control X work for me in X2.

I see the same thing as Peter for Ctrl+V. Corel changed it to "Paste as New Layer" instead of "Paste as New Image". "Paste as New Layer" used to be Ctrl+L.

I rarely use those shortcut keys anyway as it requires me to take my eyes from the screen and look at the keyboard. For paste as new image I just drag the wanted part from the layers palette onto the workspace. For paste as new layer I just drag the thumbnail from the layers palette onto the image. For a selection I would promote selection to layer and then drag that onto the workspace. Much faster than Control C , Control V.

When they finally introduced dragging an image into a layer from the image manager, that made life very easy. But dragging from the layer palette into another image, I suppose that's faster with windowed mode. I prefer tabs.

Luckily, I've taken several touch typing classes throughout high-school and middle-school, so thankfully I don't need to look down at my keyboard to hit Ctrl + C so it's very quick. Sounds weird, right? With one hand on my mouse, and the other on my keyboard at all times, shortcuts are easy and I don't have to look for anything.

Some remarkable behaviour of PSP X2:

When I hover over the scissor toolbar icon then "Shift+Delete,Ctrl+X" is shown.

When I make a rectangle selection and hit Ctrl+X (as indicated as hotkey ) then nothing is cut.
If I hit Shift+DEL then it is cut.

So either PSP accepts only the first hotkey (from left side) in hotkey list or something else is wrong.

Another cause could be that Ctrl+X is already blocked by another meaning. But how do I find out when Ctrl+X represents?
Good software should automatically replace the old meaning by none or popup a warning. But this is not the case in PSP X2.

Even worse if I want to paste the just cut (with Shift+Delete) selection and want to paste it as a new selection with Ctrl+V
then it does not work either. When I click on the paste toolbar icon everything works fine.

Some ideas?

I just fired up my copy of X2 and Ctrl+X is set up to Cut. However, it's been so long since I've used X2 that I can't remember if it was initially set up that way or if I customized it.

To check if Ctrl+X is assigned to something else go to View -> Customize - Keyboard. Select the Edit category, scroll down to and click on Cut. Next click in the Press New Shortcut Key box and hold down the Ctrl key and type X. It will tell you what it is currently assigned to.

Hope this helps.

After all I investigated all your suggestions:

I load a *.png picture, then made a rectangle selection.
Yes, Ctrl+C is assigned to "copy" and Ctrl+V is assigned to "Paste as a new selection" in Customize--->Keyboard
Moreover the hotkeys are shown in PSP menu as well. So they should work officially.

Now I hit Ctrl+C expecting that the rectangle selection content is copied to clipboard.
...but it isn't

If I copy the content to clipboard by menu or toolbar icon everything is working.
It is even working if I use the second hotkey Ctrl+Insert!!!

Similarly if I try to paste the clipboard content as a new selection by Ctrl+X it does not work either.

and once more: I am NOT warned if the hotkeys is already occupied by another (menu) function.

Unfortunately the PSP GUI does NOT offer a reverse search (enter Hotkey and get meaning).
Where are the hotkey assignments stored?
In registry? In config file ? Which?

It does off a reverse search.

In the customize dialog, the "Press New Shortcut Key" box. You type the key you want for example "Ctrl + C" and underneath the textbox PSP will list all commands that shortcut key is assigned to.

If the UI is not showing it, then there's something messed up on your system.

Have you tried resetting the UI to factory defaults?

Hi Pstein,
It sounds as if something is wrong with your keyboard mapping.
Here is my Edit menu in X2 and its shortcuts which work as stated.
http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr14 ... 003a92.jpg

(I intended to put an image here , but there seems to be a bug in the image link which gives an error "It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image." )

You can see what keys are assigned in Help > Keyboard Map , change the category to All Commands and then click on the Keys heading and the keys will be sorted in order so you can see if there is some doubling up, or what keys are free to be assigned.

You stated that Control V was Paste as new Selection but in mine it is Control E ,
Control V is assigned as Paste as New Layer.

You may need to reset your workspace by holding the Shift key down and starting the program again or Levi may be able to suggest a reset of just the keyboard shortcuts.

Ok, thank you for suggestions but I already tried them all with success.
Have a look at all the attached snapshots.

You will see: Although the current assignment shows Ctrl+C the keypress test shows [unknown].
The keymap in "Help" menu shows as well Ctrl+C as assignment.

And yes, I tried to remove existing Ctrl+C assignment and re-assigned it - but without success.

Can it be that other programs OUTSIDE of PSP occupied and blocked the Ctrl+C hotkey (Thats my guess)?
How can I prioritize PSP hotkey assignments over others?

And again: the hotkey assignment works in general.
If I assign a key combination like Ctrl+Insert then it is recognized succcesfully!!!

PSP has Always used Ctrl-C,X and V in the Windows standard way: Copy, Cut, Paste.
Ctrl-V used to be paste as new image, but somewhere Corel changed that to Ctrl-Shift-V, and assigned Ctrl-V to paste as new layer, along with Ctrl-L. But it's still a paste.
Several users have already told you that their copy of PSP works properly, and I add myself to that list. Your screen shots show nothing new.
Why not try resetting PSP as was suggested: hold down shift key while clicking on the shortcut to start PSP. Maybe save your workspace first. It can't hurt, and you never know, it might help.

No, it's not another program.

There are two types of hotkeys, system level and program level. System level lock those keys for the program that sets them. Program level keys only work when the program that uses them has focus. Most programs only use Ctrl + C, X, and V as program level. It's only a jerk program that tries to claim these on the system level.

The fact that [unknown] pops up means something was corrupted. You need to reset the keymap or the entire workspace.

Have you tried hitting the "Reset all" key on the dialog box there?

You say you tried all of our suggestions with success, but if they were successful they would work. If resetting the workspace or the keymap are not working, you might have to uninstall and re-install.
