Brian,

I'm not at all commenting on the beta testers, who do sterling work, some of whom I know. My gripe is with the process itself, and the fact that Corel appear to be disregarding reported bugs, or at the very least, dragging their heels. PSP X6 was brought to market with not only an array of bugs, but annoyingly with basic interface issues, such as screen artifacts and zoom problems etc... so much so that I still prefer to use X5. This just smacks of rushing to a deadline and poor quality control.

Don't get me wrong, I love PSP... but it saddens me to see a potentially great program stumbling on some basic errors which should be easily resolved, given the resources of Corel.

Oh, and Corel... why do we have nag screens at all when we've paid for a full version of your product? Not impressed.

Hi Howard :-)
Ditto ditto, I am slowly beginning to give up, my head is hurting from banging it against a brick wall.

My solution to the annoying pop up: I have put a shortcut to the messages folder on my desktop.
I open X6, then minimize it, open the shortcut and delete the messages.

C:\Users\name\AppData\Roaming\Corel\Messages

Sometimes it's only one message, sometimes two.
It is a bit more clicking, but less irritating that seeing those pop-ups.

Joelle:

I had read about your solution a while ago and missed the fact that the messages are in Roaming, not Local. Thanks for that, it led me to some testing yesterday.

How soon after you have deleted the messages do you get the next one?

I deleted a few of the messages, left the latest for more testing. Shortly after, a new message popped up, 504214299_017002. It only contained one file and I'm curious when it will fill in the rest of the stuff.

In each of the "messages" in the Roaming folder is a folder such as this - C:\Users\Your Name\AppData\Roaming\Corel\Messages\540226262_810007\EN\MessageCache2. It appears MessageCache2 is a duplicate of MessageCache1; I think 2 may be an update of 1 as 2 has more recent date stamps. The sub folder Messages contains all the ads and periodic announcements. Sub folder Workflow is for the administrative stuff such as questions/comments about serial numbers, trial, registration, purchase, etc. What I found most interesting is a small file under Messages named Messages.xml. It has very interesting coding such as:

Code: Select all

<message id="1395846858169" title="Caricatures -- great as a gift or profile picture upgrade!" priority="7" duration="120" modified-timestamp="1396460272000" pushdisplaytype="Popup" pushpopupdisplaytrigger="Exit" pushdisplayscheduletype="Launches" pushdisplayscheduleinterval="2" pushdonotshowmeoption="Present" type="News">
		<contents>
			<content type="body" width="188" height="131" localpath="1395846858169/body.htm"></content>
			<content type="detail" width="500" height="540" localpath="1395846858169/detail.htm"></content>
		</contents>
I have not had messages when using X6 for a very long time so I tested with X4 which produced an add every second close, alternating between a couple of ads. I increased the value for pushdisplayscheduleinterval="2" and found that the frequency of the ads reduced. However, to get rid of all the ads/notices one would have to go through all the code and make a change for each ad.

So, then I renamed the file. I launched and closed X4 many times, no more ads. This seems the simpler approach. I'm curious when there will be a new message file with a new set of ads.

If you do not get a message for a month or so after deleting the message files in the Roaming folder then that is one viable approach to get rid of the pests. For now, it seems to work, but
we will have to wait and see if renaming Messages.xml is an alternative and if it is any more effective. At least it doesn't get rid of what may be needed in Workflow.
Update:
Shortly after writing this, I tried X4 and the two messages 1395846844279 and 1395846858169 started popping up again. Corel had recreated the Messages.xml file in MessageCache1. I tried changing all the pushdisplayscheduleinterval="x" values to 30 (some are for launch count, others for number of days) but the messages persisted. It could be that the program does not recognize values above some number.

I then deleted the word Exit in pushpopupdisplaytrigger="Exit", leaving the quotation marks. So far, this has seemed to have done the trick. No more popups in subsequent tests. Time will tell what else Corel has up its sleeve.
Apr. 7 - The Messages.xml file was replaced in MessageCache2 as well. I edited that as well. No pop-up ads at all.

This is what I see when, after opening X6SP2 and then open the shortcut to the messages:
Corel_X6SP2_msg.jpg
Every so often 2 messages show.
I delete both.
Corel needs to get this sorted out, but somehow I don't think it is a priority :-(

No new messages appear (I do check once in a while) until I close and then re-open PSPX6.
It's now become a routine to do the above :-)

I followed the advice in the other posts by deleting the contents of the Messages directory. I then opened and closed the program and one new file showed up in there called Message.policy. In it I changed:
<policy type="communication_option" value="opt-in"...
to:
<policy type="communication_option" value="opt-out"...

I opened and closed the program a few times with no ads showing up. Now I wait and see if they stay gone.

I also can't believe a program that I paid full price for would spam me with advertising. It's a great way to alienate paying customers.

I checked through this thread and had tried suggested routines in the past which did not work continually.
The last edit I did was to remove all subfolders in the AppData\Roaming\Corel folder.
Then in that folder properties box set the Corel folder to READ ONLY for both my user account and the administrator account
No message subfolders have reappeared.
No ads have appeared since in Pspx5.

Since when does Corel give a sh.. about their customers? Use PSP 9 and you won't have ads.

What I did and it seems to stop it, is add .old to the end of Message.Policy found in C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel PaintShop Pro X6 (64-bit) now I bet (32-bit) will also need it as well. so just rename the file to Message.Policy.old that should fix it I will reboot to test it see if the pop up comes back and let you know. Ok its been a few reboots now and the pop up adds are gone so that seems to have stopped them on both 32 and 64bit so enjoy

I have psp x7 and the pop up ads are more than just annoying, they come back repeatedly, no matter how often i close them, and i cannot load psp when the pop up ads appear. The only time i can access psp now is after a computer restart. I tried the above mentioned fix, and deleted the single message file in the message file folder. That folder no longer shows up, but now instead of the ad popping up, i get this instead:
psp ad problem.JPG
. There is nothing wrong with my internet, all other internet applications are functioning normally. Again, when i try to close this window, another one pops up immediately. I am not tech savvy enough to mess with the registry on my own unless i have step by step instructions on what to change. I also tried unchecking the update and recieve messages boxes in the Help tab, that didn't work either. Please help.

Not the most simple answer. I contacted Corel about this and got ZILCH from them. I finally figured this out though. Beyond annoying to be hit with ads in a program that you paid for. Deleting the messages folder not working? Ads pop back up every few days?

Search for "deny a specific program access to the internet (then your operating system)." Took a few steps for me running Windows 7 but I have been ad free ever since. Used the advanced features in the Windows Firewall.

Good luck!

Corel do you hear this? When the users who are sick of your ads go for a new photo editing program, it probably won't be one of yours.

There is another solution! Change editors.

WOW! Really? I never thought of that. You mean there are other photo editors that don't make you click off ads?

It's probably not a good idea to deny recent PSP versions Internet access. For most major programs--whether from Corel or not--the last few versions tend to assume on-line access. A lot of things like Help either are not available or are severely limited if the program doesn't have Internet access.

(The person who wrote that they cannot load PSP when the pop-up ads appear has some other problem. It might be necessary to reinstall PSP, or there might be some incompatibility with some other program.)

I believe the ads are created by C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\CUH\v2\CUH.exe Certainly that is what processexplorer tells me when one pops up.

Just rename the folder, no more ads.
