Nuke the Cache - Slow Start-up for X6 SP2
Recently it has been bothering me that the start-up time (program load) for PSP X6 SP2 has been getting worse and worse.
It seemed to occur after I upgraded from SP1 to SP2.
Typically, X6 takes about 7 seconds to get to the Workspace but now it was taking up to another minute with the Hourglass rotating.
Today I have found a solution - nuke the cache.
Once I did this, the extra time with the hourglass disappeared and I am now back to 7 seconds load time.
Also, I find the time Writing Undo Data is much quicker.
There are various possible ways to do this but what I did in AppData \ Local \ Corel PaintShop Pro was to rename the folder 16.0 to something else.
This removes the Cache, Thumbs and Database (ImageDB.db).
Phew!

If the same thing happens with PSP as it does with Video Studio, when you rename (or delete) that folder, a new one will be created when you start up PSP again. In other words, this one is also likely to build up over time and start slowing you down again...

Yes a new one is created.Ken Berry wrote:If the same thing happens with PSP as it does with Video Studio, when you rename (or delete) that folder, a new one will be created when you start up PSP again. In other words, this one is also likely to build up over time and start slowing you down again...
If it behaves anything like previous versions, I don't anticipate slowing down as much, but who can guess!
I have never been forced to resort to nuking the cache before in all my 20+ years of using PSP

Doesn't deleting that cache folder in that folder erase any custom brushes, gradients, masks, shapes, tubes... etc?
You could just tell PSP not to build the thumbnails (or whatever it does) in the first place, so long as you don't use the cataloging features of PSP.
File> Preferences> General Program Preferences. Click Manage on left. Click File Format Exclusions> Select All> OK. Then click Uncataloged Folders and add the C: drive, D: drive, etc...

Re: Nuke the Cache - Slow Start-up for X6 SP2
I don't think that custom brushes etc. are held in the cache. They'll be in the user locations under My Documents \ Corel PaintShop Pro \ 16.0.
What I nuked is under User \ AppData \ Corel PaintShop Pro \ 16.0 - easily confused.
Before trying this nuclear device I deleted ImageDB.db, to no effect, and then I set all the File Exclusion Folders to prevent any cataloging, again to no effect.

Re: Nuke the Cache - Slow Start-up for X6 SP2
For those who are interested, this problem only occurs for me after I have used Manage Mode (in SP2)
With SP1, I did not have this trouble, but I couldn't retain the "Last File Tree Selected" folder.
Deleting the cache folder, or more specifically LastFileTreeSel.PspCache seems to reset the problem.
I can then load Edit Mode quickly until I switch to Manage Mode, even if only to view an empty folder on an unused local hard disk (e.g. G:\Temp)

Tadjio:
I've done some testing - no matter what I do, open in Edit Mode, open in Manage Mode, X6 (64) starts up in six seconds and is ready to go. No spinning. I've thought that the difference may be that I use Collections in my Navigator, but I tried all this with Computer used in the Navigator and the result is the same. Yes, I'm using SP2.
It's been months since I've deleted ImageDB.db and it is now 5.2 MB. My Thumbs folder is 660 MB, which may be at the limit allowed - I should clean that out.
I don't know what the difference between our systems is. Could this be the graphics card or something of that nature? Seems highly unlikely.

Re: Nuke the Cache - Slow Start-up for X6 SP2
Thanks for your input, MarkZ.
The only significant difference I can see is that I am using Windows 8.1
I have also checked and I get exactly the same effect if I select a folder in the Organizer Palette Navigation, just like I did in Manage Mode "Computer".
What is frustrating me is that with SP1 I didn't get this effect, but it didn't 'remember' the last folder selected whereas now with SP2 it does remember but causes this go-slow spinning

Re: Nuke the Cache - Slow Start-up for X6 SP2
Hmmm, it's doing it again - slow to start. If I nuke the file 16.0 it loads fine but then the next time it is slow again.
Anyone know how to effect a permanent cure?

Yeah, Corel need to have a look at the code that's causing these issues... At the very least offer a 'Clear cache on Exit' option.
