X7: No DivX, no previous codecs! How to add them back?

Post by Hser7 »

Perhaps foolishly, I just sprang for the upgrade to VideoStudio X7 Ultimate (64-bit) and installed it, but I am extremely disappointed -- even angry  -- that it ignores all the other codecs, such as DivX 10.x, that I relied upon so heavily in VideoStudio X6!

I also truly hate the fact that under the new Project Properties, the ONLY options for AVI-container outputs are for DV! And I'm not very fond of the fact that while we can created new custom settings (but ONLY for the codecs left over after X7 brutally eliminated the ones I wanted) under the Project Format heading, we can't create our own custom Project Formats.

I contend it was a terrible design decision to eliminate/ignore all those other codecs for X7. Is there any way to get them back?

I'm running 64-bit Windows 7 Pro SP1 on an Intel i7-4770K CPU and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 graphics card. DivX 10.x is installed.

Thanks

Hi

Which templates are you actually trying to create.

It may be that the templates are still available but a different approach in finding them.

Go to Settings Project Properties – DV/AVI
Select one of the DV templates rather than "previous".
The properties show as Microsoft AVI Files
New
Now you should see the templates properties as you are used to in X6.
------------------------------------
Share Create Video File
Custom Option format Microsoft AVI files.
Select the Gearwheel – options panel opens.

----------------------------------
Settings -- Movie Profile Manager (aka Make Movie Templates Manager)
New – should show similar to X6

Hope that helps

Thank you for your reply, lata!

Just to make sure I'm following you, your response doesn't address the main issue I brought up about the missing DivX and other older codecs, correct? Your reply was solely about the part where I talked in my OP about creating "our own custom Project Formats"? Is that right? Or am I mistaken?

Anyway, in your reply, you write:

No, I don't see them. And again, under the AVI format (even if when creating the output file I choose Custom format) it lists DV-1 and DV-2 and a few others, but I do NOT see DivX or any other pre-X7 codecs, which is by far the main thing I need.

64bit may be the problem. I am guessing you need 64 bit versions of the codecs?

I don't think it's that either. I have the latest DivX (version 10) on my computers, both of which have both X6 and X7 (64 bit). X6 is of course 32 bit. Yet I cannot see DivX in either version on either computer. Yet on a third computer, it is there, at least in X6 (X7 not loaded on it). Mind you, the first two computers both have 64 bit operating systems (Win 7 and 8.1 respectively). The third has Win 7 32 bit.

So we may be back to the position where we were a couple of years ago, where some people -- for whatever reason -- can see the latest version of DivX, while others can't. As with some users problems with .mov, IIRC we used to recommend installing an older DivX codec -- though that of course might remove some of the more recent HD developments with DivX. I also can't recall which version we used to recommend -- I will need to do a search.

Another curious twist is that I have XVid on the first two computers as well, but only X6 and X7 on the Win 7 one can see it.

Your a lucky man, good sir lata, to have such a rich set of options!

Here are my X6 AVI options:

But these are the only AVI options I see in X7:

By the way, I tried re-installing the latest DivX 10.x codec, but it didn't make any difference.

Thanks for your reply, aljimenez, but the later DivX installers (at least since v10) are said to include both 32- and 64-bit codecs in the Codec Pack. DivX has been working on the 64-bit version since at least 2010 (but probably earlier), and they have released 64-bit betas in 2010 as well.

Wow! With our esteemed adept Ken Berry on the case, my confidence that a resolution will be reached has soared!

I realize though, Ken, that I shouldn't really count on miracles, because I read your post a while back describing your own DivX difficulties with X6 a while back (as you refer to above).

If I understand correctly, you're not actually a Corel employee, but surely you would have more pull to be able to contact the developers than we who merely sit at your feet, right? Perhaps there's some trick or patch or something they would be able to offer?

I'm going to submit a formal tech support request on my own, but with some additional input by yourself, Ken, I might be more successful. I'll report what I hear back.

Thanks, Ken!

Correction to my reply to lata

The second image in my previous reply to lata, for VideoStudio X7, was not what was asked for, and so I apologize and offer my correction.

Here's the relevant image for X7 (which is more full than what was previously shown, but it still does not include DivX:

Hi Guys

I use my desktop pc for video editing and as you see can access Div X, although 6.9.2 not version 10.
I also have access to a Laptop, well my wife has the laptop and that does not show Div X. very strange why that should be.
I will have a look to compare both pc’s to see if I can identify any difference.

I assume Corel have been informed as Ken has been on the case, maybe another e-mail just to keep on pestering them. I don’t hold much hope as I had a problem with WMV creating new templates and that fell on deaf ears.

Hser7, can you report this to Corel via your free support period.

Quick update, the above was running Video Studio 32 bit, I have now installed 64 bit and no longer see the DivX codec and a few more that was in my original list.
So it would appear to be a 64bit issue, at least for my PC?

Thanks again, lata for your helpful and informative reply!

You note:
lata wrote:... Hser7, can you report this to Corel via your free support period...
Alas, their reply was utterly worthless! Here is what they wrote:
Corel Customer Support Services wrote:Thank you for contacting Corel Warranty Support.

But I strongly contend that VS X7 refusing to recognize DivX and other codecs IS an installation issue or bug!

I'm going to reply that way, and if I don't receive a useful reply, I'm seriously considering asking for a refund. You see, I was so frustrated with the slow rendering speed of previous versions of VideoStudio under my 32-bit XP Pro systems, I decided to home build a super-fast 64-bit PC. I'm using an ASUS Z87-A (I've been told that the Z87-based mobos are pretty much the fastest available when I bought it), with an Intel i7-4770K over-clocked processor (again, nearly the fastest available at the time), and super-fast G.SKILL TridentX RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 PCI 3.0 video card (which has 512 Cuda cores). Super-fast indeed, right?

But when I tried rendering some editing video files using VS X6 on this ostensibly super-fast new system, it was no more than about 1-2% faster than on my 32-bit XP machines! :( I nearly cried!

So I was very excited to learn that VS X7 was finally going to be a 64-bit app, and I purchased the upgrade and tried again. But not only doesn't it recognize DivX and other codecs, it was not significantly faster, either! Again, only about 1-5% faster!

I'm truly heartbroken about this - after spending a small fortune on a very fast computer, video rendering with VideoStudio X7 Ultimate still takes a long time, very nearly as long as X5 & X6 under 32-bit XP! Again, I feel like crying...

Did you ever find a solution to this problem? I just "upgraded" to VideoStudio X7 Ultimate from VideoStudio X5 Ultimate and found that I am unable to encode with DivX Codecs in VideoStudio X7 as well. DivX showed up and worked perfectly fine in VideoStudio X5 on my system, but for some reason now it refuses to show up in VideoStudio X7 Ultimate. I'm very upset about this as I primarily use VideoStudio to re-encode videos in DivX format to save space on my hard drive as well as make it easier to upload videos to YouTube or Dropbox. Now it seems that functionality is gone and I'm not happy at all wasting my money on VideoStudio X7 when it has LESS functionality than the previous version I had! I have tried uninstalling DivX, restarting, and re-installing the latest DivX version (10.2.4), which did nothing. I tried uninstalling and re-installing VideoStudio X7 Ultimate, which also made no difference. Even the latest Service Pack 1 for VideoStudio X7 did nothing to help. So, now it seems that I am stuck encoding video files in one of these formats: DV Video Encoder, MJPEG, Microsoft RLE, Microsoft Video 1, Intel IYUV, or Ulead MPEG.Now Encoder, which frankly they all suck. (There is also an option to use proDAD Codec, but whenever I select it, it gives an error message saying "Encoding Not Allowed!", so that is a waste of space as well!)

I really, really, REALLY want my DivX codec back in VideoStudio X7!!! What gives!?!?!?!?!?!

My understanding of the DivX issue, is that VSX5 is 32 bit, therefore the DivX codecs are available, with VSX7, the codecs should be available in the 32 bit version but not the 64 bit version. This I believe, is an issue for DivX to resolve, try contacting DivX for advice

You don't need VSX7 ultimate for this, there are dozens of video converters that will do so much better and faster.
