X7 - Video clips from digital camcorder will not play

Post by tripletdad99 »

I purchased VideoStudio Pro X7 and a digital camcorder for my daughter. Got her setup on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 15r) with the software. Now, when she imports a video clip (in .MP4 format) from her camcorder to the laptop - it plays fine in Windows Media player, but it will not play at all in VideoStudio's preview player.

Any suggestions on what we may be doing wrong here?

Thank you :?

There is no obvious reason why mp4's should not play. In fact, I am currently working on a project in VS X7 using high def mp4 footage from my GoPro Hero 3 camcorder.

Can you actually import a video into VS, even though it won't play? If so, can you please right click on a clip inside VS -- its timeline or library window, and copy ALL its Properties here, or take a screen grab of the Properties box and Upload it here as an attachment.

If you can't even import it into VS, there is a free small program which will give you this information, called Media Info, which you can download from http://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

Can you also tell us the make and model of the camcorder? And how exactly did she import the video to the computer?

Ken: Yes, we're able to import the video clip. She attached the Samsung HMX-F90 camcorder via USB cable... and downloaded the MP4 file onto the local drive. From there, I was able to test play them using Windows Media player - and they played fine (small little clips, only about 15 seconds). The video clip displays in the timeline fine, but when you play (preview) the project - and when it gets to that clip - it just goes black.

I'll have to get the file properties of a sample video clip when I get home.

As requested... attached is a screen shot of the video clips properties. Also, as a test, I installed VideoStudio Pro x7 on my desktop - copied the same video clip there - and it plays fine on my box. I have made sure (to the best of my understanding) that the latest codecs are installed on her laptop. Again, it plays fine with both Windows Media Player and with Quicktime on her laptop. Very odd.

Hi

You have QuickTime installed on the laptop, or try installing the latest version?

I uninstalled, and re-installed the latest version of QuickTime (just to be sure). Still no joy here. As you can see from the attached screen shot, when this clip plays - the preview window is just black. As a reminder... it plays fine in both QuickTime and Windows Media Player (outside of VideoStudio of course). This is very frustrating...

Hi

I just don’t know why that clip does not show.

Can you try renaming the clip HDV_0003.MP4 to HDV_0003.MOV

Then add that to the timeline., sometimes VS will read Mov extensions rather than MP4. again no idea why.

Otherwise can you provide a sample so we can download and try on our pc’s.

Thanks for the reply. I too am stumped at to why this will not play. As noted earlier... as a test, I installed VideoStudio Pro x7 on my desktop - copied the same video clip there - and it plays fine on my box. So, probably no need to attach a large video clip file here - as it does work on my PC.

Any thoughts on uninstalling and re-installing VideoStudio Pro x7? Any chance something went south on the initial install. Doesn't make sense to me - because the sample .mp4 files play fine there.

Hi

There should not be any problems in re-installing the program, you will be prompted to register again when accessing the guide, but that should only involve providing your accounts e-mail address.

It does seem to be a codec issue or lack off.
By the way what type of laptop is it, as I had problems with a Lenovo ???

Corel do advise installing K-Lite codec pack when having problems with HD video?

http://corel.force.com/index/articles/e ... source=kba

In the past we have never recommended this, but I guess things improve, for what it is worth I have this installed with no adverse affects.

So I guess its worth a try.

It's not clear for me which graphics driver you are using as your MB and processor are Intel and you have an "integrated" (do you mean "on board"?) Nvidia graphics. Anyway, look for a more recent graphics driver (both Intel and Nvidia have an automatic hardware check on their website) and see if this is not resolving your issue.

Was this ever resolved? I am having the same problem. I even have a brand new computer and it is still an issue. Mine will play sound but no video on various clips, but sometimes it changes which clips are not playing correctly. The files from the camera are .mov files. Any help? Thanks

Hi bcru3rds

welcome to the forums, when you say no video do you mean it shows a black panel?

What version of Video Studio are you using?

Corel have provided several hot fixes for MP4 type video, do a search of the Corel Knowledgevase.
Try searching for "GH3"

One fix was related to X4 , copy and paste the address to your browser.

http://corel.force.com/index/articles/e ... y=NoFilter

Another --Unable to import .MOV Video files from Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH3 or DMC-GH4 into VideoStudio Pro X7
Unfortunatley i cannot find the actual article, Corels knowledge base is terrible to navigate, at least i am struggling of late?

If you give more details of your video file i will search my pc to see if i have the appropriate fix.

But as I say try the Knowledge base, select Support from the link at the top of the forum.

Thanks for your help and advice. I tried the knowledge base and found this article: http://howto.corel.com/index.php/Corel: ... =&sKey=gh3#
However, when I try to link to it I get a "530 login invalid" message. I'm not sure where to go after that.

Hi

Try right clicking that link and choose Save Target As

Hopefully that will save the Zip file, make sure you download the correct one, well you could download both.
Installing the wrong file may cause VS to crash?

I also have the same problem. I too am running X7 SP1. The video imports correctly but doesn't play well, when I pause the video, the image appear but goes black as soon as I play it.

One more information, the video plays fine in Microsoft Video Player. When I use VLC, the video show the same behavior. I can make it play in VLC by changing the "Hardware-accelerated decoding" from "Automatic" to "DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA) 2.0". It doesn't play on "Auto" but plays well on "DirectX...."

Any thoughts?
