How do I move a raster layer?

Post by pixseal »

I have a series of photos that I want to align as best I can. In PSP 7, I would paste in a new layer over the background image, change transparency to 50% , use the move tool to position it, change transparency back to 100% and then hide that layer. I would do the same for each additional layer. 8)

In PSP X6 64-bit, I cannot find the move tool. :cry: I have only seen the move tool when a selection is active (marquee). How do I (A) find the move tool to reposition a layer, or maybe (B) select an entire layer?

It should be just above the Selection / magic wand tool. Maybe hiding under the Pick tool. You can also use the shortcut key M to get it operating. Or is there something more seriously wrong with your tool bar.

I guess that something is seriously wrong with my toolbar. The attached image is the toolbar while the layered image is open and the first pasted layer is active.

When you click on the second tool from the top (the Pick tool) -- or rather the downward pointing little arrow to its immediate right, does it not then show you can choose the Move tool?

Thanks, Ken! That's where the move tool was hidden. Now, only if the various help sites mentioned that ....

If you use that pick tool (Arrow) the PSP will surround the layer with a crop-tool like marquee. You can then use your mouse to move it, the arrow keys for pixel-by-pixel movement, ctrl-arrow for faster movement. Dragging corners will resize it keeping the aspect ratio.

OK, this has got me wound up on many, MANY occasions:

1] The Tool which is shown as a HAND is what you/me/one would consider as a "grab n go" for moving elements of your project, BUT as the X6 PDF says- "Lets you control which part of the image is visible in the image window"

2] The Pick Tool allows us to Pick elements of the project BUT also allows us to "Moves, rotates, and reshapes raster layers, and selects and modifies vector objects"
- The move tool also allows to move elements.

And there you have it: The Tool, which is a HAND is not for moving but used for viewing sections of your project and a PICK tool is used for Moving element of your project.

Hand = Viewing (not grabbing)
Pick = Moving ( . .and not just Pick-ing)

If I have got ANY of this wrong I'll apologize and re-edit.

Or the hand tool as I see it is like putting a hand on a large picture and moving the whole picture around so that you can move what section you want to a centre view. Underneath it is the Zoom tool for when you have a full view of your image on the workspace and drawing a quick rectangle around a section will zoom in to include that section filling the window.

Pixseal, might be a good time to hgo down your tool bar anc click on each of the little diagonal arrows to see what tools are grouped beneath them. Test each one on an image and explore.
