VSX7 64 bit Rendering Test
Having completed the first part of a video I decided to test the rendering speed of VSX7 64 bit
Project Properties
Total running time 12min 2 seconds
Comprising
Main time line
4 overlay tracks
music
titles, including proDAD titles
considerable FX effects used
Rendered as AVC/H264 1280x720 60 fps
Estimated file size 1.54Gb
Actual file size after rendering 1.19Gb
Total time to render - exactly 30 mins.
CPU usage - up to 80% complete ave. 25%, from 80% complete, 40% with short bursts to 50%
Memory used - constant 3.6Gb
Cores used - up to 80% complete, 5-6 cores, from 80% complete, all 8 cores used
Playback on a 48 inch Smart TV, video clarity and sound, phenomenal
Overall, very pleased with the result but I thought for 64 bit, rendering should have been a lot faster

Re: VSX7 64 bit Rendering Test
Hi Robert
You may have noticed my other post referring to Customise Motion, I had need to re-installed 32 bit version.
Whilst I have this installed I will run a test to render one of my projects taking note of the duration.
I am intending to re-install 64Bit to see if I have cured my Customised Motion issues.
Then I will repeat the render to compare times. I don’t intend to watch the process manager just the total times will give an idea of any improvements.
May take a while…..

Re: VSX7 64 bit Rendering Test
This may be an excellent time Robert. Please describe your sources in the timeline, photos (resolution), video clips (resolution and numbers of filters used), pan-and-zoom, music format, etc. Many things that impact rendering are not listed in your project description; there may be lots of processing going on that is really hard to speedup just by simply moving to 64 bits. Also, what else was the pc doing; any internet connection, backup, virus checking, etc will impact running times.RobertOZ wrote: Project Properties

Re: VSX7 64 bit Rendering Test
Hi guys
I would like to repeat my tests but that means re-installing 32 Bit program then 64 bit again.
I am comparing like for like with the exception of the program.
Project duration 19 minutes
72 Video Clips are MTS types.
Render Same as First Clip,
Using 32 bit render time 52 minutes
Using 64 Bit render time 37 minutes
So 64 bit seems quicker, as I say would like to repeat the tests sometime…….

Re: VSX7 64 bit Rendering Test
The tests I did now seem to indicate that 32Bit was faster then 64Bit
22 minutes for 32 bit and 37minutes for 64 bit.
This does not add up as we know 64 should be quicker.
This morning I rendered the same project using VS X6 in 22 minutes 30 seconds and that is using 32 bit.
So why is X7 so slow, more tests are required, maybe disabling Smart Render will give more consistent results.
Clearly more tests are required hmmmm

Re: VSX7 64 bit Rendering Test
Not necessarily. My experience is that using 64bit addressing when not needed can be slower. In my judgement, the 64bit version will be able to handle future 4k and higher res video sources, higher res photos, etc. However, for projects that fit well in the 32bit version, I do not expect much speed improvements... Re: VSX7 64 bit Rendering Test
Hi
Well I finally managed to re-install 32 bit version.
As a benchmark I did render using the 64 bit version before I uninstalled.
And yes same results 22 minutes for 32 bit and 37 minutes for 64 bit, that seems quite a big difference, to confirm I am rendering like for like with the programs set the same.
Anyway I will continue editing my projects with 32 bit

Hi
so there are no advantages using the 64 over 32 bit version?

Re: VSX7 64 bit Rendering Test
There does not appear to be, I am just about to uninstall the 64 bit version and replace with the 32 bit version, at least I will then have access to all my New Blue filter packages.aussiejoe wrote:Hi

Re: VSX7 64 bit Rendering Test
Could you give an update on the change of versions once complete such as any issues you find etc
I'm thinking I might do the same thing
Cheers

Re: VSX7 64 bit Rendering Test
Hmm, I had uninstalled VS completely and was just getting ready to buy an Adobe product to replace it. I think I might try the 32 bit version one more time when I get some more time.

Re: VSX7 64 bit Rendering Test
Well, in complete contrast to Lata, having installed the 32 bit version, then rendering the project with the same properties as for the 64 bit version, the render time was exactly the same at 30 mins. Will carry out further rendering tests.

Re: VSX7 64 bit Rendering Test
I posted a sort of first review of X7 on here a couple of weeks ago and that was the thing that disappointed me, was the rendering times. They're terrible on my system and X6 is faster by far. I don't even do heavy rendering, just maybe three minute long MP4 videos. It' pretty bad and as far as I can see, the only changes in X7 are cosmetic. I can see no reason to buy it, or recommend that people buy it. I think Corel have shot themselves in the foot with this.

Re: VSX7 64 bit Rendering Test
64-bit poor performance is caused by 1 or more of the following:
1)poor coding
2)debugging code embedded in the program
3)don't know how to use 64-bit tools or coding software
4)poor optimization of the rendering module
Maybe Corel will lissen to the reviewers when THEY tell them the performance isn't competitive.
We'll sea.
