Plugins Making Me Crazy!

Post by Muriel »

Good Morning!

I am using PSP X14, running Windows 8.1 64bit, with i7 processor. Half the plugins that worked in Vista no longer work for me. In some cases they simply crash the program. Otherwise they freeze the program with this display or some variation thereof:
Image

I have turned on DEP for all programs except PSP X4. The two dll files are installed in the SysWOW64 file.

Some of these filters are ones I use frequently, so I would dearly love to have them functioning again.

What are my options? Any help or suggestions are appreciated!

Many thanks..

Muriel!

This may help you. http://thepluginsite.com/knowhow/tutori ... tion.htm#8

I know you mentioned you took care of DEP so maybe FM Patcher will do the trick for you.

Good luck!!

Thank-you, Kathy!

I am heading over to the Plugin site in a moment, but thought I would check this forum first. Tearing my hair out here.. I bought and installed Version X6 today and I suppose it should come as no surprise that it recognized NOT ONE of the plugins. The files are all properly linked, but absolutely nothing appears in the program! Oh dear!

And when I tried to add it to the list of programs for which the DEP should be turned off, I was informed that I am 'NOT ALLOWED' to change this setting on 64-bit programs.

She's Baaaack!

I am beginning to figure this out, even though I doubt there will ever be a solution. I installed Version X6 in 64-bit mode, and it didn't recognize any of plugins. Uninstalled and reinstalled it in 32-bit mode and it saw them, same as Verson X4 did earlier, and with exactly the same issues. The conclusion is that the issue is with the plugins, so I am wondering if there is a way to convert these rogue plugins so they work in this 64-bit machine?

Oh me nerves!

There is no way for us, the users, to convert the plug-ins for 64-bit use. That is something the program designer would need to do but I'm not holding out much hope for some of the older 32-bit plug-ins. For this reason I primarily use the 32-bit version of X6 even though I have both 32-bit and 64-bit installed.

Good Afternoon!

I could not agree more!

I installed the 32-bit version of PSP X6, and even though it sees the plug-ins, they still do not work. It is exactly the same issue I had with Version X4, which of course is in the 32-bit format by default, when I began this thread.

I sent an e-mail off to Corel Support and Nelson replied overnight. His advice was to uninstall and then reinstall the program in the 32-bit format, but that has been done at least three times. The little '32 box' in the lower right corner of the camera logo in my start menu confirms that it is indeed installed in that format. Having said that, when I tried to turn off the DEP for that program, I was informed that I am 'not allowed' to change the settings on a 64-bit program! Seems Windows sees it in the 64-bit format no matter what I do!

I think I have hit a brick wall!

Well, Hello Again!

She's DOING A HAPPY DANCE!

I found the solution! Seems the 32-bit program lives in c/program files(x86). There is another version in c/program files which is the one I was trying to modify by turning off DEP, but Windows views that one as the 64-bit version! Once I turned off the DEP in the 32-bit version and after living and breathing this for three days, I was flabbergasted to find the plugins WORK! (They still don't work in Version X4, which should come as no surprise, given it is not on Windows List of Supported Corel Programs.)

Just in case there is someone else out there tearing their hair out over this annoying frustration, this is how to turn off the DEP in Windows 8.. exactly the same as in all the other versions, actually.

Settings
Control Panel
System
Advanced System Settings
Performance Settings
Data Execution Prevention
Turn off DEP for all programs except the ones I choose
Click on ADD. Find the program you need to add.
Apply, okay

I hate to tell you, but that is exactly how things are set up on a 64 bit operating system. 64 bit programs go to the Program Files folder, while 32 bit programs go to the Program Files (x86) folder. Been that way for a long time...

Corel is a bit 'slow' on its instructions/guides on where what should live on your hard drive. Many folks have issues with plugins, picture frames etc from older versions.
Someone at Corel needs to review these issues and make the transitions from version to version a bit clearer for users.
Maybe a feature within PSP that would allow 'automatic' migration of older features.
A quick look back through all the threads and we can see how many folks have had difficulties with upgrading.

Corel how long would it take to write a simple page/guide on the transition from 32bit to 64bit etc. Would save a lot of heart burn.

Re: Corel is a bit 'slow' on its instructions/guides on where what should live on your hard drive. Many folks have issues with plugins, picture frames etc from older versions.

Since we have a 64bit version of CorelDRAW and PSP, a lot of customers switched from a 32bit Windows XP/Vista/7 to a 64-bit Windows 7/8. They install the 64-bit version of a program, believing everything goes faster and bigger. They all learn that something has changed and why they need to understand the differences.

There are a lot of possibilities to get more information in the internet. I think there is no need for more written explanation. All users will learn while doing it, like Muriel.

I think there is. 1) Most articles are filled with techno-babble that many users hate trying to read. And 2) How about just a small disclaimer (Older plugins will not run in 64-bit PSP unless they are also listed as being 64-bit). Not a complete article on the difference between 32-bit an 64-bit systems.

Just a thought.

Good Morning, Everyone!

I learn more about every aspect of this technology from Windows to Corel as I try to resolve issues of this sort on my own than I would from reading a tonne of manuals. I enjoy this learning experience, interacting with others who have shared these frustrations and who have more experience and expertise than I, and am elated when I find (stumble on?) the solution.

While Version X6 has sorted itself out admirably, Version X4 has not. I am thinking of uninstalling and reinstalling it, putting it in the folder where I found X6, just to see if that would sort it out. I think I will set a restore point before I do that, however.. I can imagine its messing everything up!

Thank-you to everyone who replied to this thread.
