So this works for you? I have to click File/batch rename, then the list of pics. I have to click modify, then custom text, then type in the new text and click start. Then I get an error. I'm using paintshop pro 6. Says it cannot rename not matter what name I pic.

What am I doing wrong?

right now i use psp to edit pics and picasa to batch rename and tag but it's a pain switching between the 2 programs. Would be nice if I could just use psp. I don't see a way to batch tag a bunch of photos or even one photo either.

Batch rename is a pita in PSP. I have been and only use Irfanview for this. It is a small program and very speedy.
You can find a brief illustrated tutorial here:

"...then custom text, then type in the new text and click start." If this is EXACTLY what you do, PSP attempts to rename all the selected files to "Custom Text".

You need to provide a unique identifier along with the custom text, like a sequence number, the time, the original document name, whatever, so there is no conflict/doubles in new names.

I use the Batch process for resizing AND renaming at the same time, so I can rename the resized image with an identifier but keep the original intact. It works fine for me.

Also what is the exact error you are given? This will help find the culprit and the solution.

You got that right. I figured out how to do it, but it still (was an issue posted in these forums way back in 2008) does not allow sequential renaming based on the date taken EXIF data. If there is a way to submit a feature request, I'll do it. And hey, thanks for the link to your tutorial on using the IRFANVIEW batch rename process.
