Compatability Settings

Post by Nigel »

I just had a VideoStudio X7 64bit Pro crash.

I got two consecutive error messages stating that VideoStudio "stopped working", and then I got a message that told me that VideoStudio applied "compatibility setting" which will take effect the next time I run VS.

My questions:
1) What are these compatibility settings? Compatibility with what? 32bit version?
2) Should I be installing the 32bit version instead?

It would help if you told us exactly when the crash occurred. What were doing, with what format, what editing, what filters...? I have used X7 for quite a bit now (I was a beta tester) with no crashes at all. And there is certainly no need to load the 32 bit version unless you were trying to use a 32 bit filter or plug-in in the 64 bit version. That shouldn't have caused a crash, but who knows? It certainly would not have worked...

By the sounds of it, it could have been XP compatibility mode. But I hadn't thought VS could automatically switch to that mode if there was a crash...

I was just switching my project to "Share". The crash occurred just afters I pressed "Share" and before the full "share" panels were visible.

In any case, is there a way to check/change "compatibility" settings?

One more thing I noticed: When I restarted VS after the crash, it asked me if I want to recover my project file that was used when I crashed. I said yes.

The result:
I just lost a couple of small changes, so there was not much loss. However, when I re-applied the changes and saved the project, I noticed that the project file size had changed from 178K to 92K, with no "logical" loss.

What just happened?
Is there a way to manually shrink/compact the project files?

the project files are just simple text files anyrate and even if we knew how to work with them there would not be any compression to do - most likely answer is that your crash caused a refresh to the project file leaving out things you may have done and then undone leaving only the actual work needed to compile your project.

it is possible to open a .vsp file by changing the extension to .txt - but what it all means is something that none of us on this forum have ever worked out - same with .dmp files if you ever get one of those

Sorry Brian, but the project files are not "simple text files".

Are any of the Corel support people monitoring this forum?

What do you suggest is the best way to get an answer to this question?

Hi Nigel

I have not known Video Studio to auto set compatibility modes, maybe that’s new to X7

Anyhow Windows will allow you to run most programs in earlier versions of Windows, Compatibility Settings.

Right click the Video Studio icon on your desktop and choose Properties, there should be a compatibility tab, here you should be able to run in an earlier version.
Generally the option will not be selected, if selected then VS may well have done that?

However I would not have thought this would be needed for the latest version X7.

Corel support, there are no corel people monitoring these forums, we do not work for Corel, just here to help other users.
You could try Corel Support via their web site, they also have a facebook page which apparently does find Corel Employees who do reply, I think.

That may be your best option if the problem persists…..

As for VSP’s, I had a recent copy of a VSP that seemed to be much smaller than the original, I had no idea why?
The VSP recovery opens the project up to the point of the auto save options F6 (preferences – default at 10 minutes)
The new VSP will be untitled, so will require re-saving, I would suggest using a new name, the original project will still be available but may have lost some recent edits? I regularly hit Ctrl+S to save my projects, just incase of crashes, which I must say are few between.

Hope that helps

Well crashes don’t happen often, maybe I should have kept quite.
This post refers to the crash.
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=53157

I recovered the project and resaved, interestingly the new VSP file size is now 288Kb compared to the original of 559Kb
I have re-loaded both project files and confirm they contain the same clips, so what’s different, everything looks identical except the files size.

It looks like VS keeps appending changes to the project file (.VSP). By using the "Save As" option I managed to compact the file, and of course there is no data lost.
