PSP X6 - Selection not working

I tried to use selection but it is not working on a PNG image I have.
I could use the CTRL-A to select it and copy it but anything with the selection tool was failing. The Selection, Freehand Selection, Magic Wand, Smart Selection all fail to select anything. If I use the Auto Selection is does select one of the colours but that is not what I want to do.

All I was looking for was to select part of a graphic so I could crop it and save it as a new image. It seems crazy that a high end piece of software cannot do what MS Paint can complete.

What could the reason be for this issue?

I just tried selection with a PNG and it worked fine. Here are some thoughts:

• Check selections in the menu and make sure that "Hide marquee" is not checked. If it is the selection does not show on the image.
• Ctrl-A selects the whole image. If you want a portion use something like the rectangle.
• When using the selection tools check the selection type and Mode. When starting, mode should be Replace. If mode is Remove at the start, nothing is selected. Use the Add and Remove modes to modify the selection.

Good luck. If this doesn't help try resetting; hold the shift key as you start PSP. May have to do it twice. Save your workspace before resetting.
