Videostudio 8 Capture Question
I am using ADS Instant DVD USB 2.0 version Capture Wizard 3.5.12 to capture.
When I try to capture on Videostudio 8 I go into the "tools" and try to change the "change capture plug in" Instant DVD USB 2.0 is not present to pick as a option to capture.
How do I enable the ADS Instant DVD USB 2.0 to the capture plug in?
Thanks
M

Correct me if I am wrong (I have never used or seen the ADS device in question), but it seems to me you are trying to match chalk with cheese.
I don't think you need to be changing the capture plug-in at all. That should default to the Direct Show plug-in as I think the ADS device captures in DV format.
Instead, what you need to be ensuring is that the Capture options (NOT the same as the capture plug-ins) can recognise the ADS device. In other words, when you have the Video Studio program open at the Capture page and the ADS device already plugged in (preferably before you open VS??), there should be a little window in the top left of screen showing what device the program will try to capture from. (I can't remember the label on the window as I no longer have VS8 on my computer and VS9 is a little different on this).
Normally, if you only have one capture device attached, that is what should appear in your window. But if you have more than one device e.g. a digital video camera, a web camera and/or a TV card, then there should be a a little down-pointing black arrow to the immediate right of that little window which will open a drop-down menu and allow you to choose between the attached devices.
But AnimeChick is also right as the ADS site has a capture patch for VS8.

I have the same problem/ I have videostudio 8 SE and wish to use it to capture from Ads DVD Xpress but there's no capture plugin for the ADS device.
Ulead have given some instructions under the Capturing section here
http://www.ulead.com/tech/vs/vs80faq.htm
but I can't seem to get it to work. Not sure if I'm doing it right?

That link is for the ADS Instant DVD not the ADS DVD Xpress.Liamo wrote:I have the same problem/ I have videostudio 8 SE and wish to use it to capture from Ads DVD Xpress but there's no capture plugin for the ADS device.

Your HerCap.ini file needs to look like this
[CAPTURE_PLUGIN]
CurrentPlugin=0
CurrentDriver=0
DriverName=
CapturePluginPath1=VfwUleadMpegCap.dll
CapturePluginPath2=DswUleadMpegCap.dll
CapturePluginPath3=HotPlug.dll
CapturePluginPath4=SonyMVCap.dll
CapturePluginPath5=WMFCap.dll
CapturePluginPath6=ADSCirrusUSB2.dll
DefaultPlugin=ADSCirrusUSB2.dll
[CAPTURE_SETTING]
ForceToUsePreviewMode=1
DisablePreviewAudioForDV=0
[Version]
ProfileVersion=1
Also ADSCirrusUSB2.dll must be in the VideoStudio 8 program directory.

Thanks George. Thought it might be easier to bring it in directly to the editor just for settings and stuff.
Normally with my DV camera I bring it in in .avi to Video studio 8, do all my editing and save out as mpeg it seems to produce best quality.
I haven't done much with VHS and DVD Xpress but I presume it automatically encodes or whatever to mpeg and that I'll have to bring it in in that format and save it out as mpeg again. Does this affect quality? Or is it ok as long as I save out using the same settings as the file.
By the way I use DVDWS2 as well to do menus and burn so that's a third package. Just messing about to find the best workflow but worried I'm using too many packages.

the dvd xpress is for hardware mpeg encoding -- so that's the format you would capture using Capwiz (or the Ulead software where there's an available plugin).
Try to avoid re-encoding your mpeg captures -- as that will affect quality (in general). So I agree -- use the same settings as your captures, and make sure the Smartrender option is turned on.
I save the mpeg encoding until one of the last steps before authoring. If my source is DV Camcorder, I transfer the dv .avi's, apply my edits, and then convert to mpeg in the final stages.
