Is there any way to move a layer's contents (an object) by dragging with the mouse from anywhere on the page, not only when the mouse is inside the boundary of the object?
Because if I have a small/scattered/hard-to-see object on a layer, it can be difficult to select it, plus I risk deselecting it and selecting another object, on another layer. In PhotoShop I just select Move and drag from anywhere- I can move the layer and it remains selected.
Thanks.

Try this: Activate the layer in the palette, then hold down the shift key and click and drag the move tool from anywhere in the image.
