Thumbnail mystery

Post by terrypin »

This may be unrelated to my other posts about scripts and batch processing, but I have a sneaking feeling they are connected because the files in question are common to both discussions.

This illustration is hopefully self-explanatory:

And here's an example PNG:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/401 ... xample.png

I can't get my mind around this inconsistency and it's making me uncertain what files I'm working with!

Edit: I think I'm onto something. It must somehow be due to the original file being an animated GIF, like this one:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/401 ... tedGIF.gif
I wanted a single image and think I obtained it either via Animation Shop or PSP8.

Does that somehow break PSP8's display procedure? (No checkerboard; and on a Background, which is not supposed to contain any transparency.)

It has a black background when I open it in PSP. When I go to Image > Palette > View Palette Transparency, the background disappears. Looks like black is set as the background color but then why does the background look gray in the Firefox but white (clear) in Windows? The background is transparent in Internet Explorer, by the way.

Tested in PSP8.
So apart from an inconsistency in display, what are you trying to do.

Note also that if you load that original white background image and try and convert it to a raster layer it gves an error message that 'Image must be converted to 16 million colours'.
Also that you cannot duplicate it. Nor add a raster layer until it is converted to 16 million colours.

So it appears to be a gif saved as a .png without converting to 16million colours.

If I then save it as a gif the black background appears in the explorer thumbnail and renaming and loading that gif back in it has the same properties as the png sans the white background. ie must convert to 16 million colours to add a raster layer, or convert to raster layer and cannot duplicate (greyed out).

The relevant part was to extract an image from that animated GIF for use in my video editor.
Note also that if you load that original white background image and try and convert it to a raster layer it gives an error message that 'Image must be converted to 16 million colours'.
I don't get any message when I drag OriginalExample.png (from Explorer, where its thumbnail is misleadingly white) into PSP8.
Also that you cannot duplicate it.
I can.
Nor add a raster layer until it is converted to 16 million colours.
Agreed.
So it appears to be a gif saved as a .png without converting to 16million colours.
Yes, presumably that's why PSP8 gives the warning message when opening the GIF.
If I then save it as a gif the black background appears in the explorer thumbnail
Still white here.
and renaming and loading that gif back in it has the same properties as the png sans the white background. ie must convert to 16 million colours to add a raster layer, or convert to raster layer and cannot duplicate (greyed out).
So didn't test further.

Very close, Grazie! I'm in the early stages of experimenting with adding 'animated boots' to the GPS-recorded walks (hikes) in my holiday DVDs. And the very first I'm trying happens to be in the Anza Borrego Desert State Park, California. So your example was apt. Your sound track needs a few panting sounds though, plus an occasional scream as I snagged cactus. :)

Ideally I'd like to get the boots 'directional'. If I can't, maybe I'll settle for a PIP or map one one side, clip like yours on the other.

Yeah.... I think you'd be better off with TOP VIEW Footstep outlines/fills. Could be very humorous indeed. You'd be easily avaible:

* to change direction

* one to go one way and the other . .

* one to turn into a Long John Silver

* left and right reversal......

* THROB red!!!

* Jump>> Bunny Hop!

* Have other footsteps appear by magic

* Footsteps that LOOSE the shoes and become FEET outlines.....

Although the GIF is nice, it is very very limiting.... I'm working up a footstep treatment in Vegas.
