Re: help a newbie
Waiting to see the image to be sure.
But if it happens specifically with the Paint brush or fill tool and the like then I would assume that maybe you have a texture turned on in your materials palette.
In your materials palette you have two overlapping squares. The top one is your foreground color and the bottom one is your background color. Underneath each of these blocks are three buttons. 1) Type, 2) Texture, 3) Transparent.
If the second one is turned on then textures are turned on. Though it may be a bit hard to tell. So another way to tell if it's turned on is to double click inside the foreground color square. THis will open up the color dialog. On the right-hand side you'll see an option for "Texture" if the checkbox is selected then textures are turned on. If it's not, then textures are turned off.
I cover the basics of the materials palette in this old video if you need a more visual approach - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9GEAvbcWi4

Re: help a newbie
Sorry Johnzen but the forum has a 500Kb file size limit.
Re-save the image as a Jpeg at medium to low compression to reduce the file size below 500kb, then you will be able to attach the image.
post updated
and as far as I know no larger than 950 pixels wide and 800 pixels high
