PSP X6 HELP with .psp images

Post by CapricornCaz »

I have run into difficulty with PSPX6 - it will not open .psp images from the documents file. I have tried to alter the default programmes by right clicking and also in the control Panel. I now need to uninstall I think and reinstall.

Do I use the Control Panel Uninstall programmes? I have heard people talking about using a Cleanup programme for PSP X6 do I use the Control panel then the Cleanup? or just the Cleanup. Excuse my ignorance I am not technical by any means.

But this is driving me mad - I have to open in X2 at the moment and convert to .pspimage to get it to open in PSPX6 in the Edit tab. otherwise it opens in PSP X6 Merge and flattens my layers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not clear what you are talking about there. In one sentence you are saying .psp files and the other calling it .pspimage and talk about converting the .psp file to a .pspimage in X2.

I will presume you are working in Edit mode . Can you load a jpg, duplicate it (so it has two layers) and then do a Save As and save it as a .pspimage file. Can you then reopen this in X6.

If you also want to make it compatible for opening in X2 then you need to use the Options dialog from the Save As dialog and save as PSP 12 compatible.

Or are you meaning that when you double click on a .pspsimage file it won't open in X6?

Please detail the steps you take to see if others can duplicate your problem.

Before uninstalling you could try resetting X6 to its defaults. Do this by holding down the Shift key while you double click the X6 desktop icon to start the program. It will ask if you want to reset your program to defaults and accept this. You may need to save your workspace before this if it is set up differently from the default.

.psp is the original file format for PaintShop Pro, the older versions used it before they moved to .pspimage.

They have discovered that if they try to open a .psp image file it opens it in PSPX6 Merge for whatever reason. So they are having to open the files in PSPX2 in order to save them as a .pspimage file so that PSPx6 doesn't try and open them in Merge.

Have you tried renaming the file extension to .pspimage? Does that make a difference? Or do you have to convert inside PSPX2 first?

Thanks Levifiction. You keep learning something all the time.
The change from .psp in PSP7 was to .pspimage in PSP8 and above.
I saved an image consisting of two layers from PSP7 as a image.psp file and it opened in PSPX6 without any problems.
Once again mine is pre SP1 and 32 bit on XP machine .

LeviFiction - Thank you - it would seem that I am not the only one with the problem. When I try to open a .psp file from documents it opens in X2. I right click and try to alter the default but even though I choose Paint Shop Pro X6 it gives me Merge - so that flattens my image . .psp files and .pspimages have layers and the copyright is on one layer. Flattening it makes it impossible for me to use in making signature tags which I do. I am a tutorial writer. I can open .psp files from within PSPX6 but it's so much easier searching through my documents as I have them categorized. I have tried within PSPX6 altering the File Format Associations but they are greyed out. I have tried resetting the database and the defaults.

I have tried in the control panel but it will not let me change whilst PSPX6 is installed.

I will get onto Corel and see if they can do anything

Thank you all for your help

Have you tried to right-click on your file and use "Open with" and choose PSPX6 from the list? I'm pretty sure that all versions of PSP add themselves to that list when you install them. I just tried that with a .psp image that was created with PSP5 and it opened in X6 with all the layers intact.

Thank you LindaSue. It is the old format from up to PSP version 7 that were .psp files and not .pspimage files that won't open . Yes I have tried right clicking and open with but the only option you are given in PSPX6 is PSPX6 Merge which opens it in a photo merging part of Paint Shop Pro and flattens the image - no good if you are wanting to preserve layers.

Corel first said that .psp files may not be compatible with PSPX6 - but they advertise that they are on the site and you can open them from inside PSPX6. I just find it so much easier from my documents file as they are all categorized and I can scroll through quickly. They have now asked for a psp file (from PSP7) and they are going to test it. Thousands of taggers who use PSP still us the old PSP7 as they love it so and Corel are moving away from the original idea and more onto the photoshop features as far as I can see so they may not be interested. But taggers will move to other programmes if they don't sort it - people have collections of old images which they love and guard - lol!

I would be interested if you would try an old .psp file if you have one

If you have accidentally assigned PSP Merge to the file format that might explain the issue.

I'm going to ask you to re-do what you have already done. I just want to make it clear, I know you've already done this but there are going to be some extra little details that I want you to look out for.

1) Right-click on one of your .psp files

2) Hover over the "open with" menu option and select "Choose Default Program" from the menu.

3) The Open With dialog pops up, make sure "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is checked.

4) Click on the "Browse" button.

5) In the dialog that opens I want you to navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\PaintShop Pro x6\

6) Find the program "Corel PaintShop Pro.exe" make sure it is not "Corel Paint Shop Merge.exe" The names are very close, and both will probably be right next to each other. You want to be careful to pick the correct one. One is Merge, the other is the full PSP program.

Select "Corel PaintShop Pro.exe" and hit the "Open" button at the bottom of the list

7) Corel PaintSHop Pro x6 should now be listed as one of the available options. HIt "Ok"

8) Try opening up the file now by double clicking on it.

Did it work?

Carole, I opened an old, multi-layered ".psp" file in PSP7 that had been created with PSP5. I re-saved it as a PSP7 file. When I double-click the file in Windows, it opens in PSP7 so I have to right-click and tell PSPX6 to open it, which it does. The layers are all intact in X6 and I got no message telling me that I'd have to merge them.

Linda, Carole isn't saying PSP forces her to merge her layers. She means that the psp file is opening in Paint Shop Merge. And Merge itself flattens the image.

Paint Shop Merge is the program that PaintShop Pro uses to perform HDR merge and Photo Blend. So her .psp files have become associated with this program and not with PaintShop Pro itself.

LindaSue - thank you for trying

LeviFiction

I have Edit set as my default mode in PSP

I have done this again - lol! Exactly as you stated. Even though I go and choose Paint Shop Pro X6.exe it does not register in the recommended programmes
I cannot alter the Corel Paint Shop Pro Merge (64bit) - it will let me choose a different version of Paint Shop Pro e.g. X2 but although I choose the Paint Shop Pro X6.exe it does not register in the recommended programmes list.

I have uninstalled cleaned up and re installed, reset the defaults, been to the control panel and it won't let me do it there either and I can't do it within PSP X6 as all the ticks are greyed out and I can't untick

No matter what I do I cannot get rid of the Corel Paint Shop Pro Merge - only when I uninstall but when I reinstall it comes back and still can't be altered.

I have obviously broken it

Re: PSP X6 HELP with .psp images

Just another thought. I originally set the 64 bit to open my files - then I realised that a lot of my plugins are 32 bit and wouldn't work in 64 bit version. I can't alter the default from 64.exe to the 32 bit one either. Although the ones defaulted to 64bit open in 32 bit when I have that version of the programme open.

So these exe's seem to be locked in the Windows Recommended programme and once chosen can't be altered for another version of PSPX6 - although you can alter to PSP7 or PSPX2 for instance.

mmmmm Wouldn't you want to sometimes open in another version?

Just a thought

I have found that I can drag and drop into PSPX6 Edit mode and resave from there But it doesn't solve the problem - it can't be right that you can't alter the default opening programme either from within programme, from Windows Explorer or on Control panel

Carole:

Have you tried the route -- Control Panel/Programs/Make a File Type always open in a specific program/ -- and then at .psp go to change program and then use the Browse in the bottom right? With that even though the program is not among the Recommended Programs or Other Programs you can navigate to the X6 in either Program Files or Program Files (x86). Just now using that route I was able to change .psp association to PaintShop Merge and then back to PaintShop.

Some time ago when I tried that for another file type I could not get the PSP X6 to stick, as you have described. When I went back to this a few weeks later the associations were available.

I think the reason you cannot change association from 64 to 32 is that both versions have the same .exe name, that is Corel PaintShop Pro. Once you set one, it somehow know which version it is, but when you want to change it thinks you are selecting the same name - just speculating.

No I have tried several times and I cannot do it unfortunately - it drives me mad!

If I downloaded the programme again would that help?

It keeps remembering this setting even after I have uninstalled and reinstalled

I have finally solved this problem myself. Corel support obviously has someone who has never opened PSP and is just looking in a manual for possible solves. I have found a download programme by looking on Windows help which addressed this problem although Windows say that I have to tell the manufacturer. It worked like a dream! and 100% free

I am still in correspondence with Corel who are telling me to alter on the control Panel and by right clicking although I have told them 5 times now that I COULD NOT do it.
