PSP X6 Ultimate and Raw images

Post by gsrunyan »

I have recently started shooting in Raw. When I bring the images into PSP, they all have a color cast that I can't figure out how to remove.

Can anyone tell me how to remove this color cast?

Thanks

PSP isn't all that great at raw files. Is it opening in the RAW Lab? If not you may have to turn it on at File> Preferences> File Format Preferences and check Open RAW Images with Camera RAW Lab. You might also try Aftershot Pro.
It would also help to know what camera the raw files came from.

The camera is a Sony alpha 3000. PSP reads the raw files.

RAW really needs to get standardized to avoid these kinds of problems.

I don't think PSP supports that particular model of camera. If it has changed the way the RAW works for that model then PSP will try to read it but something won't be read correctly which would explain the color cast.

Here's the list of supported RAW formatted cameras - http://corel.force.com/index/articles/e ... source=kba

As DF suggested, have you tried AfterShot Pro to see if it produces a decent result?

Reading a RAW file and producing a useable image from a RAW file are two different things. If, in fact, your camera isn't supported by PSP, one option is to use Adobe's free DNG Converter to first convert the RAW file into the DNG format.

Two comments!

If the camera is not supported then how is PSP opening it?
And.
Maybe your colour cast is a white balance issue.

If PSP thinks its a RAW file that it can open it will try. Seriously when it comes to RAW PSP tries very hard to read the information in and interpret it. It's even taken TIFF files and tried to open them in the RAW editor because it thought it was a RAW file it could open. Naturally this resulted in a messed up image.

In their case Sony RAW files are supported, but his particular camera model is not. Sometimes companies make small changes to their overall RAW format camera by camera. So PSP can open it, and can interpret a lot of the data, but the potential changes could be effecting the final result.

I also acknowledge that this may not be happening at all. But RAW interpretation isn't the same as simply rejecting a file-type it doesn't know. PSP will try even if it has no choice but to fail.

Does the camera come with its own Raw file converter. Most usually do. You could check if the image appears OK there. Also you might try a free program Irfanview . For me it was able to open 5D mark II raw files before Photoshop was updated.

Since the Sony A3000 is a new model it's unlikely that PSP supports it yet. I had that problem with colour cast with my Sony A57 and PSP X5. PSP X6 supports the A57 so no problem.

As mentioned earlier, use either Sony's RAW editor or convert the file to DNG with Adobe's free DNG converter.

I have discovered that the FastStone Image viewer will allow me to read these images and save in any format. I am saving them in Tiff in order to not lose any data.

Has any one tried to use a different Raw converter with the program other than the default Camera Raw Converter? I have PhotoNinja that has replaced my Adobe Raw on PS and would like to do the same thing with PSPx6 but I don't know how to do it or if it can be done. Preferably with out saving an intermediate tiff. I'm new to PSP and transitioning from PS. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
