VideoStudio X5 won't import still images
I want to make a video slideshow from a series of JPEG images, but am unable to import them into the VideoStudio library or timeline. When I try, I get the message "may be of an unknown file format, computer does not have enough memory, or file is copyright protected." Not a very helpful message, since JPEG is a very common format, my PC, running Windows 7 Home Premium, has 6 GB of RAM, my images are not copyright protected, and I have no trouble importing and working with images in other video editing programs--such as Windows Live Moviemaker. I have no trouble importing and editing video files in VideoStudio X5, but although I've had the program for nearly a year, I hadn't tried to use still images before. Also, I have an older version of VideoStudio (X2) installed on a six-year-old PC running Windows XP, and it imports both still images and video files without any problems. Corel's dinky warranty for X5 has expired and I don't want to pay them for technical support that should be free. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this problem?

Re: VideoStudio X5 won't import still images
Some other users have reported a similar problem. IIRC, it seemed to have something to do with EXIF information stored with the original image -- too many words in one section, or something like that. The solution was simply to resave the image under a different name in another photo editing program. I realise that could get onerous if you have lots of photos you want to include. But you could at least try it with one or two photos to see if that works.
I hasten to add that most of have no trouble at all importing JPEGs into any version of VS...

Hi Kike
welcome to the forums
To add to Kens reply…
Are you able to use the sample photos from the library those wont have embedded Exif data.
Try dragging them to the timeline, if you have problems read on…
Some users have had problems regarding the Graphics Driver
Read this report to see if you are experiencing the same problems?

Have you applied the Service Patches provided for X5?

Re: VideoStudio X5 won't import still images
The sample photos wouldn't import into the timeline either. I get a message that they couldn't be located. Also, I found two service packs are available, and since I couldn't tell if either has already been installed, I downloaded both and tried to install them. With each one, I got an error message saying the installer couldn't determine which version of VideoStudio X5 is installed, and therefore the install was terminated. Duh? By the way, I initially had trouble with version X4 (I couldn't get it to create a DVD). I contacted Corel technical support, and they suggested that I do a "clean uninstall," and then reinstall it, which I did and after that it worked fine. Perhaps I should try a clean install of version X5 (if I can remember how to do that).

The "unable to determine version" message is corels strange way of telling you that the patch is already installed.
The current version and patch level can be found by opening the Corel Guide - clicking on the two little gear wheels in the top right corner and the choosing "About VideoStudio"
There is an article in the Corel knowledge base on how to completely uninstall X5 so that you can do a clean re-install - find the article here :-

Re: VideoStudio X5 won't import still images
Hi Mike
Well part of my problem was the library samples requesting a re-link, then when you followed the links it did not work.
All other user problems seemed to be when using Windows 7 64 bit.
If doing a clean install does not fix the problem then investigate the Graphics Driver issue.
Try to do an Auto Update for optional items to see if any drivers are in the list?

Re: VideoStudio X5 won't import still images
Aha...I ran Dell's handy-dandy program that looks for driver updates for my PC model and it found two graphics drivers that were out of date. So I installed them, and now VideoStudio seems to be working fine. Looks like I won't have to go through the trouble of doing a clean uninstall after all. Thanks for your help!

Hi Mike
Thanks for the feedback, glad you have sorted the problem.
It is strange and maybe a little difficult to believe that the graphics drivers can have such an effect.
My laptop was brand new and couldn’t believe it needed an update?
The issue only affects a few users so It is much appreciated that you have confirmed this problem
