Lip Sync Problem

Lip Sync Problem
Here we go, another long one here to do with lip sync.
I use a dvd recorder to record tv. I then use Videostudio 8 to take the video off the disc and then render the video to create a dvd using Videostudio. Everything worked ok up until about a week and a half ago. Then my lip sync went out even though the mpeg file created from the captured video would play back ok. When putting on to dvd the problem could be seen straight away. I removed and re-installed Studio, Videostudio and Movie Factory but that didnot cure the problem.
However, searching the Pinnacle and Ulead forums gave some possible solutions some of which I tried without success. As I had always used Videostudio to carry out this operation I decided to use Studio. I copied a 2 hour film off the BBC last night and transferred it to the pc via Videostudio. First I created a new file in Videostudio and then created a disc image using Movie Factory and found my lip sync to be out.
Next, I opened up Studio and created the video using the files that I had previously copied in Videostudio. For some reason, Videostudio splits the video up into sections 4 minutes and 59 seconds long so you would be looking at 24 scenes for a 2 hour film. When I opened the first scene in the edit window I found that the picture for the last frame was blank and required the last frame to be reduced by 2 frames to actually see a picture. This was through each scene so had to do each one. I then created a DVD file which I then found that I could open in Videostudio and alter bit rates and screen size and the lip sync was ok. I then used Movie Factory to create a disc ok.
One outcome of this is that each of the scenes when open in Videostudio storyboard did not show the two blank frames at the end of each scene while Studio was showing them. I think that these blank frames were knocking the lip sync out. I have done two other films since using this method and they appear ok with the lip sync.
The other matter that is advantageous for video editing is the benefits of having more than one editing programme on the pc.
Hope this is of help to somebody

P.S. Ideally, I would like to try and find out what exactly has happened to put it out.

Dropped video frames can get the audio out of sync. Your eye won't notice a single dropped video frame here or there during playback, but since the effect is cumulative and it only takes a couple of dropped frames to produce an obvious sync problem, it is very important to eliminate dropped frames entirely during the capture process itself.
The worst setup for getting a good capture is one with separate devices for audio and video capture, i.e. a video card with video-in functionality for video capture, and a sound card or integrated sound solution for audio capture. If there is any difference in lag between the commands to the devices to initialize and start capture, and the availability of the data to UVS, then you will wind up with sync problems.
Single-device solutions such as external USB or FireWire boxes have a much better chance of eliminating sync issues, especially those that support locked audio and video. Because of clock drift and the odd framerate of NTSC video (29.97fps), capturing long segments with perfect synchronization is difficult if not impossible without locked audio support.

Well thanks for this. I'm not too technical about all this but it always seems to happen after about 25 mins on the burnt DVD (not on the original recording on the hard drive). I've got a good system with 1000M of RAM and Pentium 4 etc. etc. It's when burning discs from material captured from the TV card. It doesn't happen if I burn using basic Nero (I don't think, though I must double check), but thqt's very limited software. I thought it was to do with joined sections, but I've just tried putting two very short sections followed by a long on the story board then burning and it still happens at around 25/5 mins. The original recording on the hard disc is always fine. It's something that happens in the renderring/burning process (all done in Video Studio
.
The thing is it never used to do this. Just since about Christmas. I wonder if I can get the whole programme off and re-install?
Anne in dispair!

Rhonda, you give me hope! Thanks a lot. Has anyone any tips for re-installing by the way?
Incidently, and following my previous comment, Nero works fine, this problem is purely in Video Studio 8 and happend badly after joining two longer files. The vision is about two secs behind the audio! Interesting! Particularly interesting when watching a music programme but films are fun too!

Here's a recipe for a clean reinstall:
1) Clean up C:\Windows\temp directory. Uninstall anything to do with VS 7/8. Clean up all files in C:\Documents and Settings\[UserName]\Local Settings\Temp folder. Uninstall VideoStudio 8 using Control Panel Add/Remove programs.
2) Delete folder {4F1DA6BF-3614-48A1-9970-9E90F646789E} in C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information (Make sure you set "Show hidden files and folders" in folder option in OS)
3) Delete the folder "Ulead VideoStudio 8.0" folder in C:\Program Files\Ulead System
4) Run Regedit from Start/Run in Windows task bar
5) Delete folder {4F1DA6BF-3614-48A1-9970-9E90F646789E} in
KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\
6) Then reinstall program and any patches.

You can read more about this here:sweetonemusic wrote:Re Rhonda's comment any more details on "re-gressing the DVD burning engine"?

This last one also has this link to the original DVD Burn engine files:
http://home.powergate.ca/~lwarner/dvd.zip
I know this is confussing but if you follow Ken's instructions to uninstall and install a clean copy of VS8 and 8.01 update and then the Burn engine regression.
Basically you download the file and unzip and then copy the files into this directory:
“C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\DVD”
Make sure you save the files in that directory to a backup folder. If you run into probelms you can always restore it to the original files. This saves reinstalling all over again!
Let us know how it goes!

Thank to all. Unfortunately, after a clean re-install (I think) the problem remained. Then I pinned to down to mpeg editing and have read this often caused sync problems, though why it started in the last few weeks I don't know. As a stop gap for editing and burning TV programmes I'm using a download called VideoReDo which purely edits mpegs and corrects any sync problems - at what it does it's brilliant. I then go back into Ulead with the fused file to add titles and burn. Of course it doesn't solve the long term problem of occasionally wanting to real editing with effects, transitions etc. I thought of getting Pinnacle having once trialled it but I've heard it's a horror story and had some problems even on the trial.
Any comments or further thoughts anyone? Any reliable software out there that, like Studio, allows for a separate audio track for importing CD tracks decently (which Pinaccle doesn't - they sound awful).

Anne,
Once you have passed the files through VideoReDo using Quick Stream Fix or simply remuxing to an output file or simple editing and outputting a new file, the files should be stable enough for full-featured editing with VideoStudio.
It should take care of sync alignment issues permanently. Make sure "output streams for Movie Factory" is checked in VideoReDo.
