Renaming the 17.0 folder, which resets the program seems to have made the difference, but only after also rebooting the pc.
The Convert Step Got Some Problems message then replaced the No Burner Exists message. But that was because I was trying to
burn an regular DVD out of unconverted AVCHD files. I will keep all the other suggestions in mind for the next time this type of problem occurs.

You have two options,
1 / to convert your files to Mpeg2.
2 / Deselect Do Not Convert Compliant mpeg files, will force the burner module to render the files. (project Settings - cogwheel)
