WinDVD 10 freezes when I select region

Post by David M »

After browsing this forum, I fear that any response I get will go over my head, since I don't get into the guts of my computer's software very often. But I'll do my best to explain the problem, and to understand any response I get.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium on a Toshiba Satellite M645 laptop (4GB RAM, Intel Core processor). I installed WinDVD BD (I believe I had it installed before and deleted it. Whether I did or not, I don't believe I've ever succeeded in playing a Blu-ray on this machine). I downloaded an installer from toshiba.com, and I have Corel WinDVD version 10.0.5.363 installed (it identifies itself as Corel WinDVD BD on my startup menu, but the program when running is called Corel WinDVD, but it also displays a Blu-ray logo). I've checked for updates, and there are none available.

It plays regular DVDs fine, but when I put in a Blu-ray, it gets as far as letting me select my region, and then everything freezes. I can't move the mouse or hit Ctrl-Alt-Del. I can only hit the power button and restart the machine.

I have an Intel(R) HD Graphics (Core i5) chip. I've tried letting the computer do an automatic online search for updates, but I have been told my driver software is up to date.

Any suggestions?

... but when I put in a Blu-ray
Do you mean a Blu-Ray disc? If so, does your Toshiba have a Blu-Ray drive in it? Not all that many -- except very high end, expensive ones do. And of course to play a Blu-Ray disc you must have a Blu-Ray drive, not just a DVD drive.

As far as I know, I have a Blu-ray drive. The disc tray has a Blu-ray logo on it, and WinDVD is able to recognize that I am trying to play a Blu-ray.

An ArcSoft evaluation tool has told me that I have a functioning Blu-ray drive ([D:]\ MATSHITA BD-CMB UJ141EL).

Also, I am able to navigate into the Blu-ray disc and look at the folders and files, so the hardware seems to function.
