Making a video file from Ipad Air .mov files
Hi guys
A new one for me. I've just attempted, as a test, to make a custom video file from a short, 45 second video clip from an Ipad air tablet. The original format is a .mov file and I have tried to create a custom mpeg file from it.
I am using VS12 and a Medion (Akoya) E6300D quad core pc.
I have tried creating a 720x576, 16x9 format mpeg using, upper field first, lower field first and frame based but on every occasion my VS12 stops working after 2 or 3 pct conversion and I am requested to close the programme.
Is there something else I should be doing or is VS12 perhaps not compatible with Ipad Air files?
Many thanks
Mark

Re: Making a video file from Ipad Air .mov files
It could also have something to do with the version of QuickTime you have on your PC - QuickTime (QT) is the software which produces .mov video. A version of it would have been installed with VS X2. Some users have difficulty with the latest version of QT and find that installing an older version - like 7.5.5 -- resolves the issue. However, that could then mess up things if you use iTunes, which of course requires the latest version of QT.
Can you right click on one of the .mov files in the VS timeline or library window, please, and copy ALL its properties here? If it is in reality a high definition mp4 file using the .mov extension, then some users also have difficulty with that specific format, and it will need to be converted to something else before VS can handle it.

Re: Making a video file from Ipad Air .mov files
Hi Ken
Nice to hear from you. I have tried uploading an attached file showing all the properties requested. I imagine it is a high quality definition file as it is almost 83mb and is only 40 seconds long.
My first attempt at uploading failed as the file was in excess of 2mb so I will try to send it over 2 replies.
Here goes the first.
Now that I've got it to 1.85mb I get the message that it is too large as the limit is 500kb ???
So that was a waste of time.
So I'll try it manually here:
Under General -
Type of File: VLC media file (.mov) (.MOV)
Opens with: VLC media player
Location: E Drive
Size: 82.8MB
Size on Disk: 82.8MB
Created 21st January 2014
Modified: 27th December 2013 (this was when the video was made, it was copied to my pc on 21st Jan)
Accessed: 21st January 2014
No Attributes applied
Under the Details tab I have -
Name: IMG_0007.MOV
Type: VLC Media File (.mov)
Folder Path: E:\Ulead........
Size: 82.8MB
Date created: 21/01/2014
Date modified: 27/12/2013
Attributes: nothing here on this line
Owner: Everyone
Computer: User-PC (this computer)
and that's it.
If I can be of any more help please let me know.
My thanks in anticipation.
Kind regards
Mark

Re: Making a video file from Ipad Air .mov files
I'm afraid that does not really tell us anything, and certainly not the information I was after. That is really only the Windows-type Properties. What I asked was for you to put one of the files on Video Studio timeline or in its library window, then right click and copy the Properties. If you can't get one of those clips into VS, then we'll need to think of something else, like the small freeware program GSpot which will tell us the codecs used and other information about the files.

Re: Making a video file from Ipad Air .mov files
Hi Mark
we do seem to be having problems e-mailing / uploading a sample video.
Your video is H264 Mov, I know you cannot create this using Video Studio but should be able to convert to Mov- visual maybe Mpeg4
Using Video Studio 12 (X2) will limit your options, the program is just little old. You may be best to try the latest trial version X6, you get 30 days free.
Try this............
Use Share Create video File
custom
Quicktime
Options button
Set these details, the frame size is User Defined
Navigate between the General and Compression tabs.
QuickTime Movie Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1024, 25 fps
Frame-based
MPEG 4 Visual
100% Quality, 15 Key Frame Rate
None, 8.000 KHz, 8 bits, Mono

Re: Making a video file from Ipad Air .mov files
Hi Mark
Thanks for the sample.
I am also having problems with VS 12 crashing using that video H264 Mov
However
Using the latest QuickTime versions were a problem for older Video Studio versions.
Re-Installing version 5.7.7 did cure issues for some.
Please uninstall QuickTime and re-install from this link
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL26
During install take care to de-select QT auto updates
I have now managed to render the video to Dv-Avi and DVD Pal (Mpeg2) without crashes.
Will do a few more tests but really need you to check out the QT version 7.5.5
Mark:- what are you intending to create, a DVD Disc or video for the internet?
Thanks for the sample.

Re: Making a video file from Ipad Air .mov files
Hi Trevor
Success!!
I uninstalled the latest version of quicktime as you suggested and downloaded v7.5.5 and using the Custom tab was able to create an mpeg 2 video, thanks.
However I was unable to define my own frame size and was restricted to 720 x 576 with a file size approx 50pct at 43.8mb v the original of 82.8mb.
I then thought to select AVCHD/Pal HD 1920 and this produced a file of 57.5mb, which would be marginally better but would only open with VLC, none of the other players.
Should Windows Media Player be able to play this second file?
The format for that second file was Upper field first.
Another question, as you mentioned the older versions of VS cannot cope with current versions of quicktime. If I were to install VSX6 could I then reinstal the current version of quicktime and find that it all works together?
Many thanks to you and Ken for your help and patience.

Re: Making a video file from Ipad Air .mov files
Does the file that will only play in VLC play in the Quicktime player?
As for X6 and the latest version of QT, complaints about them playing together seem to be fewer than with earlier versions of VS, though IIRC there have still been some. In other words, I am not totally convinced that X6 has totally resolved the issue, and that other factors peculiar to individual computer set-ups may also be factor. But to resolve the issue, try it out with the trial version of X6 and the latest version of QT.

Re: Making a video file from Ipad Air .mov files
Hi Mark
You have tested the video by rendering to various formats.
Can you tell us what you are intending to make?
If it’s a video for the internet then you can use similar properties as the original, using Mpeg4 or Mov.
If it’s a Standard DVD Disc then it has to be Mpeg2 720 x 576 x 25fps x16:9
