X-5 does not capture widescreen

Post by Dadjunk »

I have been capturing videos for quite a while without any problems. I use an HD canon DV camera to capture the video that I took. Recently the capture is wider than 4:3 but not as wide as 16:9 and the image is distorted. I have removed and reinstalled X5 and am unsuccessful at capturing 16:9. Is it Corel or an errant codec?

Corel does not use its own Firewire driver for DV and HDV captures. Instead it uses a Microsoft driver which comes as part of Windows. Unfortunately, Microsoft updated that driver in Windows 7 (and probably also 8 and 8.1) and quite a few of us have had problems with it. (I too have SD DV and HD HDV camcorders, both Canon, plus one Sony Digital 8 which also uses Firewire.) The first thing you can try is a small freeware program which I used for my HDV captures, which is called HDVSplit. A simple Google search should find it.

But if it is a driver problem, then you will need to roll back the Firewire driver to a legacy one, as follows:

1- Open Device Manager

2- Expand the "IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers" node in the device tree by double clicking.

3- Select the Driver tab and the click the Update driver button.

4- Select "Browse my computer for driver software"

5- Select "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer ..." and Check the box before “Show compatible hardware”.

6. Choose the second option--- "1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)", and click next to update the driver.

Ken, Thank you for that solution. I will download and install the alternate capture program.
Can I ask another question? Before my most recent re-install of x5, I had auto movie templates. They are no longer there. I have downloaded all of the free templates and bonus content.

Hi

Are you referring to Instant Projects, downloaded from the Do-More templates section.

Once installed they should be here:-
C:\Users\UserName\Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\VSPTemplate

If you have deleted that folder during the re-installation process then they will need re-installing.

The downloaded files are saved to folders here, be aware they have strange names that don’t really identify the contents?
With approximately a hundred to go at you have your work cut out......

C:\ProgramData\Corel\Downloads
