Compass Headings True to North

Post by dave0judy »

I use my X6 to draw flight maps for my flight simulation software. As with all navigation maps (marine, aviation), the magnetic north is used rather than true north. As I generally use the pen tool to draw my flight paths, it helps a lot being able to see the compass degrees at the bottom as I draw the lines. However, these compass headings are based on true north rather than magnetic north, so I have to continually add or subtract the difference between true and magnetic headings for my area (14 degrees west for US East Coast) and draw my lines accordingly.

I have searched for an option, where I can set the compass headings to magnetic, but it seems that it does not exist. If it does, I would appreciate where I might find it. If it does not exist, possibly this might be considered for an upcoming update/upgrade?

If so, considering that the variance between true and magnetic north differs depending on time and location, anyone using this would have to obtain what the variance is for their location. I would assume that this option would require:

1) checking to change to magnetic. (If not checked, true headings are used).
2) The number of degrees difference (To be added or subtracted from the true degrees)
3) Whether east or west. (Determines whether 2) above is added or subtracted).

With my knowledge of programs, I would assume that a couple of nested if/else statements would suffice for this option.

I have had suggestions to use the image rotate to rotate the necessary degrees and then draw the true lines and when finished return to straight, in addition to scripts and other work-arounds. While these would work, considering the complexity of the flight lines, the only simple way I can think of is to draw them using true compass headings, print it out and then just turn the printed map. Works, but sure not very professional.

Thanks, :x
