File compatability with VS ProX5

Post by andyfranks »

Hi - I'm looking to buy a compact camera and edit the video it shoots with Pro X5. Can I import MOV files from the camera into Pro X5? Another format mentioned is AVI M-JPEG - can I import this? Also, if the camera shoots at 30 fps can this be mixed with footage that was shot at 25 fps? Presumably you would output it at 25fps? Thanks, Andy F

Hi Andy

When you render 30 fps to Pal 25fps 5 frames will be removed, every 5th frame will be removed, this may be noticeable when playing back the video.
How much depends on the movement within the video file, slow movement may not be noticeable, but panning may produce a slight judder.

If you are creating the video for youtube then retain the 30fps, only when burning a pal disc would you need to use 25fps.

You should be able to import and edit most mov video, QuickTime Mov are just a container, there are many different compression types, I counted 21 options within VS5, Photo Jpeg and Motion Jpeg are listed as Mov compressions.
H264 however is not available using Video Studio. You will be able to edit those types but not create/render to H264.

Unfortunately living in a pal country using 25fps is a bit of a problem when choosing cameras, many point and shoot using 30fps.

Thanks. The format is referred to as MOV [H.264 + Linear PCM (stereo)] - can this be imported and outputted?

Another format mentioned is AVI M-JPEG - can I import this? Thanks, Andy F

Hi Andy

I don't know??

VideoStudio Pro X5 - Supported Media File Formats

They list AVI but not individual compression types, there are approx 800 types of AVI.

I think you should be able to use M-Jpeg.avi, but not create that type, you would have to render to another type/format?

Certainly Mov M-Jpeg ( Motion Jpeg) is available.

What camera are you looking at purchasing, maybe someone already has the model and can help?

Hi - this is the camera I'm looking at, the Canon PowerShot SX160 IS. Movie file type is MOV [H.264 + Linear PCM (stereo)]. On this one it seems to be 25 fps, which is fine. I want to be sure I can import the movie file to Pro X5.

H264 however is not available using Video Studio.
Just a footnote here. When Trevor said this, it was in the context of the .mov formats which VS could accept. So I think he was trying to suggest that H.264 .mov files are problematical. H.264 is, however, a general codec synonymous with AVCHD, and VS can edit and output it when it is in .mpg, .mts or .m2ts modes.

Thanks Ken

Yes I was referring to Mov H264

Andy

Although Video Studio will create H264.mts video it will not create H264.Mov
You may have to create your own template to render these types, Share create Video – Same as First Clip is not available

I have a canon 7D that creates Mov H264, 1920 x 1080 and 1280 x 720 I do not have a problem in editing these other than having to use Smart Proxy. I cannot however reproduce / Render to H264.Mov

I know there have been reports of problems from other users but for me no issues.

If you are still unsure you need to get hold of a sample from that camera 1280 x 720 x 25fps, try searching the web?
Or maybe ask the shop to allow you to take a sample video, records to SD card.

Oh.... I also own a canon D20 I will have a look at that video format to see if its similar to the PowerShot

Many thanks. Some people do seem to report issues but appear to get round them eventually. Good idea to try and get a sample of the video and actually test it. What are the issues with outputting the file as a different format to H.264? The footage may be mixed with other formats during editing that are not H.264 anyway.

Issues with changing format are generally losing quality. How much loss depends on what format you change it to, and whether this is a problem is up to your eyes only :)

Take an SD card (assuming this is what is uses) with you, pop into a shop and ask to shoot a little movie using the camera.
Take card home, download VS trial and test away :)

Hi Andy

Converting your video file to another type depends on what you intend to make, A standard DVD and you have to use Mpeg2, for the internet Mpeg4 would be suitable and that is probably the best option for the Mov video.
Then the interlacing has to be considered especially as you are combining the video with other types?

If you cannot get the samples from the shop's demo camera then I can provide some from my cameras, D20 and D7, similar properties but not exact match?
D20 is however 30fps.

Hi - many thanks so far.

I am looking to check if my Corel VideoStudio ProX5 editing software will recognise footage from a Canon PowerShot SX160 IS camera I am looking to buy.

I have obtained sample footage from Canon. The footage I think is H.264 (HD) 1280 x 720 25fps with a .MOV ending.

When I try to import it I get an error saying ‘Quicktime is required to open MOV files. Please download QuickTime from Apple’s official website and try again’.

I have seen a fix for this on a website but have done what it says and the problem persists:

http://corel.force.com/index/articles/e ... source=kba

I have uploaded the footage into my sharefile folder, if you click on the link you can download it:

https://andyfranks.sharefile.com/d/s5186bcf2ef24965a

Any help or suggestions much appreciated.

Many thanks, Andy

Hi Andy

Yes that opens using Video Studio X5.
Playback stutters a little, but smart proxy does improve things.
I was able to convert to MP4 using the Upload to You Tube option, also to Mpeg 2 DVD

The sample is Mov H264 unfortunately you cannot render to Mov H264 using Video Studio. I own a Canon 7D which produces similar video, although editing is a little jerky I have no problems in creating other formats.

QuickTime, not sure what version I have but know that the latest version worked ok, some users require using an earlier version.

You do need to install Quick Time if you have not already done so.

Hi - thanks. For no particular reason VideoStudio seems to recognise it now so I think that's OK. Thanks for your help.
