Importing from a DVD with Video-RM and Video-TS files

Post by martyt »

Hello.
I have some TV recorded material on the hard drive of my Panasonic DVD recorder. In the past, I would copy what I wanted from the HDD to a DVD, insert the DVD into my PC and then from the DVD import from the Video-TS file into Videostudio. I have since updated my Panasonic DVD Recorder and now cannot import from the DVD into VSX6. From my searching on the Net I believe this to be attributed to the file structure on the DVD as it now contains two folders...Video-RM and a Video-TS. I'm wondering if anyone else has come across this and what you have done to get around it as I'm sure it is the Video-RM folder causing the problem. The Video-RM folder contains Video-RM.BUP, Video-RM.DAT and Video-RM files. The Video-TS folder contains Video-TS.BUP, Video-TS.DAT, Video-TS, VTS-01-1. VTS-01-2, VTS-01-3, etc, files.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Have you tried copying only the Video_TS folder from the DVD to your HDD - then remove the DVD from the tray - and in VideoStudio use the "Import Digital Media" option and browse to the Video_TS folder.

Thanks for your reply Brian. Yes, I have tried that without success but will have another go at it. It's almost like the Video_TS folder needs the Video-RM folder it to play correctly. Last night I tried copying again from the DVD recorder's HDD to a DVD and an on screen text message came up before disc finalisation saying 'for playback only'. I'm just wondering if this means it can't be copied. Anyway, I'll let you know how I get on.

Hi

As far as I know, at least with my old recorder, if using a DVD-RW finalising of the disc would be done automatically when ejecting the disc.

Using a DVD - /+R I had to finalise the disc from the recorders menu.

If you are able to view the files on the pc, copy the VOB files (Video_TS Folder) to a folder on the PC, then re-name using Mpg as the files extension. If you are able to do that then import to Video Studio timeline,

Thank you lata. I won't go into everything that I've tried before your suggestion but nothing was working. Anyway, I did as you suggested and Videostudio has imported the Mpg file!! However, it has brought it in with a 4:3 aspect ratio (original was 16:9) and there is no audio. I checked its properties and it had NTSC DVD when this has come from a PAL DVD. Also, Videostudio is slow in its response to playing back the file. It's late at night now so I'll do some more on it tomorrow. Thank you.

I'm not having any luck when importing the renamed vob files to mpg. I can import the mpg file into videstudio (which takes longer than normal) but it has no audio and its properties are that of an NTSC DVD with 4:3 aspect ratio when the original files came from a PAL DVD with 16:9 aspect ratio. Settings and preferences in my project are set to PAL DVD. Also, Videostudio seems to 'hang' for a while before playing the imported mpg file. I'm now looking at other ways to convert the vob files to mpg.

If you do a Google search for "vob to mpeg" you will get quite a few hits for free convertors - take your choice .

I've used VOB2MPG, and it has worked well for me.

I found a post on another forum where a person was sent a DVD with VIDEO_RM and VIDEO_TS and could not play it on his player or PC. He wanted to know how to copy what he needed from the original DVD to a DVD he could play. Maybe some of what is contained in the post can help you create a file that you can import into VideoStudio. Here is the link to that post: http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/3601 ... EO-RM-fies.

Thanks all for your responses. From the many google searches and tests I have done over the last week this is what seems to work best for me...use VOB2MPG to convert the VOB files (found in the Video_TS folder) to MPG files. Where the Mpg files have an aspect ratio of 4:3 (or have been changed to 4:3?) I then use DVDPatcher to patch the Mpg files to an aspect ratio of 16:9. I make sure all other settings of the Mpg file are the same in DVDPatcher before patching. I then import the patched Mpg file into Videostudio without problem. From what I understand there is no quality loss during these process (which is reasonably quick) and upon viewing the files in Videostudio this appears to be the case and the file's properties are as I expect. It's been a week of learning...thanks again.
