VideoStudio Pro X5: Can't create or import MP4s

Post by NeoScyther »

Hey everyone. I have an issue that I've seen "fixes" for, but none have worked for me. Basically while using VideoStudio Pro X5 the program will crash on me if I create an .mp4 file, as well as crash if I import an .mp4 or open a project with an .mp4. I imported an mp4 into a project just a couple weeks ago and don't think I've made any significant changes since (ie. no Windows reinstalls or such). Out of the "fixes" I've seen, here are the ones I've tried:

1.) Reset VS to factory defaults by renaming the 15.0 folder to 15.0_OLD or similar
2.) Install codecs
3.) Install Quicktime
4.) Install Adobe Flash
5.) Remove any browser plugins named "Browser Manager", "Babylon", and "BrowserProtect"
6.) Uninstall and Reinstall VS itself.

It's strange that it's now not wanting to work with MP4s in any way and I'm not sure why. I do have the most recent .DMP file if need be sitting on my Desktop ready to upload. While it's not really essential (I can always create videos using .wmv if need be, I just prefer .mp4 due to quality and file size), any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi

Difficult when it used to work and now not, something has changed?

Some problems have been cured by installing an earlier version of QT

Can you try installing QT 7.5.5
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL26

If you use I-Tunes it may affect the functionality?

Is the problem with all types of MP4 clips.?

Are you able to render to MP4 using the sample clips from the library?

I uninstalled Quicktime and reinstalled it using the link you provided, but no good. Still can't use any MP4 files.
Then I tried to create an MP4 using one of the sample videos. I used the one that's just a yellow spiral with some liens coming out of it (I guess it's supposed to be a sun or something). That worked just fine. I also created a new project file and imported that MP4 file, and it worked just fine. I tried to import another MP4 that I've been using for a while now, and it crashed again. I also don't use iTunes at all.

I tried to attach the .dmp file, but the forums won't allow that extension for an upload, so if someone wants to look at it (or even can look at it as I have no clue how to open a .dmp file), let me know and I can upload it somewhere.

There is absolutely no point in trying to upload a dump file here. None of us works for Corel -- we are all volunteer users just like you. So forget that as none of us understand the code used in the dump files.

However, can you please download a small freeware program called GSpot -- which you will find with a Google search -- and direct it to look at one of your problem mp4 files. Then if you can take a screen grab of the GSpot page and upload it here. Then we might have a better idea of what is going on.

Hi

There are many different flavours of MP4 video file some of which causes problems for Video Studio, knowing the properties using GSpot will help
Strange that you say you have been able to use this variety in the past.

You may have to use a video convertor to create a more editable MP4 file.

If possible can you upload a sample to a sharing program, 4Shared, UpforDown, SkyDrive from Microsoft.

We can then try on our systems, but think we may have the same issues?

Yeah, it's strange as the project file in question where I initially embedded the .mp4 to was created back on the third of this month, and just a couple of days ago the project crashes when I try to load it. After some testing it only crashed when I tried to import an .mp4 (and ironically the mp4 was initially created a while back using Pro X5). After trying to render a couple different file types it only crashed when rendering an mp4 (specifically, I went to MPEG-4, then the second option under that, I think it was the iPod/iPad HD option, though that's what I've always used).

Here's a link to the file on SkyDrive. For reference it's an intro to a review series I've been working on.

Hi

Thanks for the sample…

No problems for me in opening that video file, these are the properties I see.
Yes they do appear to be the iPhone 4/iPad HD option.

NTSC non-drop frame (30 fps)
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1280 x 720, 30 fps
Frame-based
H.264 Main Profile Video: 5000 Kbps
48000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 160 Kbps

You should not have a problem using this video? Something must have changed on your pc to cause this conflict???

K-Lite is a codec pack, I have never used to recommended installing this as it seemed to cause more problems than it fixed, however the recent versions seem ok. Corel do recommend installing this when having problems.
I would not advise installing without trying myself, I have had this pack installed for a while and have had no problems.

Video files from a Digital Camera or Digital Camcorder will not import for editing in VideoStudio

FWIW, like Lata I have no trouble importing that clip and playing it and doing edits to it. Given its properties, I agree with lata that there is no evident reason why it should not import into VS. Have you considered doing a Windows Restore to a time when you knew the video *would* import?

I tried installing the codec pack (as well as a couple of others), nothing.
Unfortunately I have no restore points from a couple weeks ago when everything worked okay.
I even just ran CCleaner and that didn't do anything.

At this point my best option might be a complete reinstall of Windows, but I'm not up for doing that right now, so I'll probably just settle for rendering in .wmv for now. Not a huge hit on quality and the file size is only a little bigger than what my videos normally are. I do appreciate the suggestions though.

May or may not be relevant but I notice that you have an AMD video card, what version of Catalyst Control Center are you running, some versions of the 13 series have caused some issues in the past, the latest version 13.9 has corrected many issues.

Strangely I didn't have any version of Catalyst installed, so I installed the latest version from AMD's site (not the beta)...and it didn't help whatsoever.

So as a quick update, I still don't have the issue fixed. However, I did a few different google queries and came upon someone else who had issues with MPEG files and a DLL file called uvHTMPEG2.dll. I'm not 100% sure if this is related to my issue, but I did a search on Windows and that .DLL doesn't exist at all on my PC. Could that be what's causing my issue, and if so how do I go about getting that file? Any Googling I do on it just takes me to different cleaning software that cleans up Registry errors and such and I already have CCleaner to do that. :D

Hi

For what its worth I do not have that dll file on my pc and do not think it is your problem.

Can you try updating Direct X from this link. 95 Mb
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... px?id=8109

1 / Download the file
2 / run to extract the content to a folder on your desktop
3 / run DXSETUP.exe

Post updated

Try re-naming the Intro2.mp4 to Intro2.Mov, does that file import to VS.

So going through that DirectX download and installation did nothing to help. However, renaming the file from .mp4 to .mov did help. Interesting.

Hi

Well MP4 and Mov are very similar, MP4 was developed from the Mov format, originally they would have been identical, I guess MP4 has probably been improved.
MOV and MP4 are simply containers holding the compressors so changing the extensions does work for some files.

Still does not explain why a standard MP4 does not open in VS especially when VS created the file?
