VS Pro MP4 Question?

Post by maximus01can »

Howdy,

Been a while since I've posted, but with some new xmas toys was just wondering if I upgraded from my VS11+ version to Pro X6 would I be able to run some of my DVD's through VS converting them to MP4 and have them play on my samsung note 3 and wife's new Ipad? New to this once again and getting older so my learning curve is a little more like a learning flat....I've poked around and there seems to be a thousand app's out there, but if VS can do this for me I'd upgrade and still have all the functionality for my new Sony A65 camera as well. Any input and or guides would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Max

Assuming that the DVD's are of your own making then you should have no problem importing them into VideoStudio X6 in an editable format - so that you can then do whatever you like with them - certainly including exporting them in mp4 format

Any guides or is it pretty much idiot proof...I've found that nothing is actually. Don't really want to do anything, but convert Blu Ray or DVD files I've done previously to MP4.

It's basically quite easy - you put your DVD in your computer tray and in VideoStudio right click on the timeline and choose "Insert Digital Media" - then put check marks in a few boxes and the video is imported to your timeline in mpeg format - which you can then do whatever you like with.

before you invest why not download the free 30 day trial of VS and check out it's features

Thanks, I'm doing that as we speak. If it works nicely that'll be nice to just have 1 app that will do everything for me.

Howdy Again,

So I download and install VS Pro X6 and tried to convert a dvd with no extra editing to MPG4 1280x720 :

Wow, it was painfully sloooooowwwww and I have a pretty fast machine....importing the chapters is painfully slow....1/2 hr just to import the chapters and another 1/2 hr to get to 16% rendering.......way too much effort for the bang...maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Cheers,
Darren

Video conversion take time especially if you are going from standard video to HD.
Why are you going to HD if your source is standard? It will not improve quality.

How long in time is your DVD that you are converting? You have not posted how you proceeding so it is impossible to tell if you are doing something wrong.

I agree it's been a while and I'm probably going to far with the conversion thing. In reality the screen is like 5.5 x 3 so what would be the lowest settings that would still look good. I don't care about getting into super high resolution etc as long as it looks good on the screen. One other question, is there a format that I can convert to that will play on both my IPad4 and also the Samsung note 3? Thanks or all the help.

Cheers

I have no idea what your iPad or Samsung can play. Your manuals should tell you.

Why not simply convert a short (60 secs or so) and try them on your devices?

Hi Max

Insert Digital Media, you mention Chapters.

One of the panels allows you to select the clips to import, choose only the “titles” and you will get the complete video. If you choose Chapters the video will be split to individual chapters/clips
The video files you exported from disc to Video Studio are Mpeg2 types, right click one in the timeline and select properties, what are they?
Should indicate 4:3 or 16:9 which will help in deciding what to convert to.

5.5 x 3 screen is widescreen 16:9 ratio. But if your DVD’s are 4:3 then the video would be stretched to fill that screen, so we really need to know the properties of the originals?

The iPad and Samsung Android devices can both play AVCHD. That is the format I use with my Galaxy 3 smartphone. Given the small screen size, I reduce the maximum bitrate to anything between 6000 kbps and 8 kbps, and the results appear excellent on the Galaxy. You could probably use an even higher bitrate, but that of course will create larger files, and I don't think the extra quality can be (easily) detected by the human eye.
