I have a problem with Smart Proxy acting up. Here's the details:
I have a project with 3 HD video clips. A week ago I created proxy files by right clicking each clip & selecting "create proxy file".
I could tell all 3 proxy files were created because:
-each clip had the proxy file icon
-in directory "user\zzz\my documents\corel video studio pro \15.0\Smartproxy" there were 3 "upx" files named "~Proxy+original file name.upx"
My project played without stuttering displaying the 3 video clips. I saved the project.
A week later I opened the project and the stuttering returned. I did a little research & found out that the original proxy files still existed in the directory listed above. However, since the project displayed massive stuttering I assumed that it wasn't using the proxy files. I re-generated proxies for 2 of the videos (I'm in the process of regenerating the 3rd) & now my project plays fine.
I checked the directory where video studio stores the proxies & new there are two sets of files. The newer generated files have a suffix -1 appended to them. The proxy files created a week ago & the ones created today are the same size:
week old file A = same size as hour old file A-1
week old file B = same size as hour old file B-1
As soon my 3rd proxy file finishes generating I will save the project.
QUESTION 1: If I shut down Video Studio will the proxies stop working again? If so is there any way to "re-link" them with spending 2 hours to re-generate them?
Or, is the proxy function flaky enough that I should generate my own low res files?
Someone else with this problem suggested
1. creating your own low resolution "proxy" files
2. editing with those files
3. when finished with the edits rename the low res files & VideoStudio will walk you through a process to use the original HD files.
Question 2: If this is a known problem in VS V5 is it fixed in V6?
I'm running this on a 3 gig dual core intel chip, Windows 7 32 bit, 4 gig of ram, with plenty of disk space
Thanks!

Re: another VideoStudio v5 Smart Proxy question
Yes its "flaky". You need to follow my suggestion and create your own low res proxy files. You only have 3 clips. Wait until you have to recreate 30 or 40 each time you reboot. So the best way is to create your own.

Re: another VideoStudio v5 Smart Proxy question
Hi delaluz
Smart Proxy should be retained for your clips each time you open Video Studio.
I do not know of an option to re-link the proxy files to a particular clip?
Some observations….
1 / If you re-name or move the clips on the hard drive the proxy file associated with the file will be deleted/removed.
2 / Smart Proxy works when playing in Project Playback, it will have little effect to Clip Playback
3 / Providing the double icon showing on the clip is showing then the clip is using Smart proxy, I assume you also lost that icon?
4 / If you allocate another Smart Proxy folder location will produce the problem you described. Recreating the proxy files will create a similar name (~Proxy_00085-1.upx) (suffix added)
If you are using an external hard drive for the Proxy folder, make sure this is turned on/active before running Video Studio.
Manual proxy approach……….
Yes you should be able to render each HD clip to a new file, maybe DV-Avi.
The originals should be all in one folder with the new files in another folder.
When you have completed the editing, re-naming the folder will cause a re-link request, re-link to the files within the HD folder. I think you will have to re-link each file individually?
I would run through this re-link process before you start editing, if it does not work for you then a lot of time has been use editing, although there are other ways to re-place the clips.
Ultimately what are you trying to make?
This will help in deciding what to convert the HD files to. So if a standard definition DVD Disc then Mpeg2 could be used?
Having said all that Smart Proxy should work and if not there will be a reason…………..

Trevor,
Thanks! Proxy worked enough (I had to re-create 2 files)for me to finish my project.

Re: another VideoStudio v5 Smart Proxy question
Is this actually true? If Video studio can't hold the proxy file than that's very dumb, I have the same question as the starter of this topic, and now that I read this after doing a search before I made my own post. I'm very disappointed and I guess learning a new editing program is going to be my next move. I to noticed 3 files in my proxy folder with the same name, I did a search through the my proxy files for the same reason why delaluz did. I was hoping to somehow relink the files instead of creating a new proxy file.JohnDale wrote:Yes its "flaky". You need to follow my suggestion and create your own low res proxy files. Re: another VideoStudio v5 Smart Proxy question
Hi
I am relatively new to HD video and using Proxy Files having recently updated my camera to a HD type about 8 months ago.
I have to say that I don’t have a problem, not that I have noticed.
I use the defaults locations for all my files other than the working folder, one allocated for each project.
I have ran some tests in the past, creating new Proxy file Folder locations can cause some problems.
Using an external hard drive would also cause problems ---- make sure its turned on before starting VS.
But if using the default locations I have had no problems.
It would however be an advantage if a re-link option was available for Proxy Files, unfortunately not.
There has to be a reason why some users are having these problems, it does not happen to all, at least it is not widely reported as a problem.
