Can I save a burned dvd back to a hard drive?

Post by cbrown4444 »

Hi have many custom home movies that I edited and burned to dvds. As a precaution, I want to back them up on my external hard drive.
How can I copy them to the hard drive AND play them back?
I am able to copy the VIDEO and AUDIO folders, but cant play the movie with the menus.
Using Windows 8 and Corel Video Studio Pro X3
Please help

Saving the Audio and Video 'TS' folders back to your hard drive is a quite acceptable way of saving your DVD content - how are you then trying to play them back - they will not play in VideoStudio if that is what you are expecting but all mine play perfectly well with menus in my copy of WinDVD - there are also many other software players out there that will play them with menus - just not VideoStudio although VideoStudio can be used to re-import the content in an editable form.

VideoStudio can also be used to make and save the folders to your hard drive while in the DVD creation module - it can also be used to make an .iso disc image file which is another way many people save their DVD's onto the hard drive.

just a note of caution - all Video_TS folders have the same name and all the files inside have the same names - make sure you save each Video_TS folder inside a named folder of their own - otherwise each new one will simply overwrite the previous one.

Thanks but how do I play the VIDEO_TS file on my hard drive?
When I right click on the folder, there is no--Open With... option
How do you play a folder?

open what ever programme you are using to watch DVD's on a computer and select the option to play file

Programmes such as WinDVD and Roxio and a few hundred other free ones will play a Video_TS folder on a computer

The fact that nothing appears in the 'open with' option means you do not currently have a programme to use - not that it cannot be opened.

Hi

Not all players will play the menu structure.

I use VCL player which does for Standard Definition.
Same as Brian says to play the folder ----- using VLC menu — Media – Open Folder – browse for a Video_TS folder

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

For HD Bluray and Avchd not as easy to find players that do the menu, I think I am about to purchase Win DVD Pro 11 from Corel, download from US site saves a few £’s + 15% discount till 29th,
mind you I will still have 20% vat to pay

Give the Win DVD trial version a run
