More noise in RAW than in JPG

Post by ikruusa »

Hi,
my Sony NEX-6 camera is set to store pics in RAW+JPG. Recently I happened to review one raw picture at pixel level in ASP and then opened the JPG version.
This is what I saw (screenshots):
RAW opened in ASP: http://www.hot.ee/bzmeez/asp/girl_aftershot_raw.png
JPG opened in irfanview: http://www.hot.ee/bzmeez/asp/girl_irfan_jpg.png

The RAW is having less details/more noise than JPG. I didnt find any way to make it look better... I am a bit puzzled. Where could be the problem? Could it be related to camera profile?

Thanks,
Indrek

Well, the JPG has noise reduction applied in camera. You would need to set up NN in AS to get to something similar. Or a combination of Wavelet Denoise and Wavelet Sharpening.

On the other hand, the AS engine is not necessarily the best, as it has not been kept up to date....

Indeed, camera does NR. I haven't just found a balance in ASP yet. I can add sharpening and NR but still can't get the nice smooth picture with lot of details. Though, its matter of learning for sure.

Just for comparison - this is the out of the box (ie. as it opens it) image from Lightroom:

Maybe there is no point to compare those pictures as default settings for different programs are different. Though, I tend to think that ASP could do better.

UPDATE
------------

I just found about how good are Wavelet Denoise and Wavelet Sharpen plugins. To be honest I am impressed. And uh, convinced myself that I can survive with Aftershot Pro :)

My only complaint would be that the default settings (or built-in algos) could be better in ASP. You know, the first impression and stuff.
