Gopro MP4 files import without sound.

Post by MNsurfer »

Hi,
I've just started using Video Studio Pro X6 and so far love it. I have a bunch of MP4 videos that I made with my GoPro and GoPro Studio. I'd like to be able to import the MP4 files and use them in X6 but they import without any sound. Is there a setting I'm not getting right for importing MP4 files? The GoPro files have audio and music and play well on all players.
Thanks.

I have a GoPro Hero 3 and the files import and play perfectly in my VS x6 on Windows 7. I didn't do anything special to achieve this. But can I ask if you could play a clip in the timeline and select 'Project' mode (just below the preview screen). Does the audio play then?

Could you also let us know which Hero you have -- or better, could you right click on one of the clips in the VS timeline and select Properties -- then tell us the details of the audio format on the file (though I think they are all the same on the Heros...)

Ken,

I have a Hero 3+ Black. All of the videos directly from the camera import correctly with sound.

The problem is with files I have already made with the GoPro Studio software which have titles, effects, and music added. They are saved with .MP4 extensions and play with sound in all players. When I import these files into VS they loose all sound. When I right click properties it says Audio type - none. I have a bunch of these and would like to be able to put several together and add some new effects with VS x6 and then burn to DVD as a AVCHD to preserve the GoPro HD.
Thanks

I'm afraid I would be guessing as to the exact audio format in those final files. I have had difficulty with Hero 3 (not Plus/+) in using Studio so have been importing and editing straight into VS X6. No trouble whatsoever. So could you please right click on the edited video in VS and tell us exactly all the details of the audio Properties...

If I get properties of one of the files from my Windows folder I get this:

VIDEO

Length - 00:05:04
Frame Width - 1920
Frame Height - 1080
Data Rate - 15397 kbps
Total Bitrate - 16937 kbps

AUDIO

Bit Rate - 1539 kbps
Channels - 2 (stereo)
Audio sample rate - 48 KHz

When I click properties of the same file imported into VS as a .MP4 file I get:

VIDEO

Video type - H.264 Baseline Profile Video
Size - 8000 frames
24 Bits, 1920 x 1080, 16:9
29.970 frames/sec
rate - 15360 kbps

AUDIO

None

When it imports these GoPro films it strips all audio.

I will have to take a look at the Studio program output to see what format it uses. But at first blush it seems that it uses a codec which VS can't access.

Unfortunately, I cannot get Studio to work today (Merry Christmas to me -- NOT!!) The native audio of Hero video appears to be MPEG AAC at 48 Hz and apparently 128 kbps. I have tried to find details of Studio's audio output from its Manual, but that detail does not seem to be there. It still seems to me, though, that the Cineform codec used is not being accessed by VS. (I noted that Cineform itself was taken over by GoPro in 2011.)

Anyway, others, using other editing programs including Premiere, have reported similar problems with video converted in Studio losing its audio when imported into that other program. Cineform posted this as the solution, which involves installing an AC3 filter -- I imagine into Studio: https://cineform.zendesk.com/entries/20 ... onversions

I finally got Studio to work and have played a little with it. Essentially, while using the Cineform codec, it converts video -- including Hero mp4 -- into either HD .avi or HD .mov. I did both conversions from some of my Hero 3 footage. The avi output -- which not unexpectedly is large -- uses rock standard PCM for its stereo audio tracks at 48 Hz. The mov output on the other hand uses Little Endian audio, again stereo at 48 Hz. Both output formats, moreover, show up in my VS Properties box and play just fine on my computer, including the audio properties.

Given those audio output formats, I am not really sure why Cineform recommended installation of that AC-3 filter (which is of course Dolby audio). The original audio format of native Hero mp4 is MPEG AAC.

But now I am really interested in your own Studio output. Since shows "none" under VS Properties > Audio, can you download the free (and small) codec examination program GSpot and point it at one of your Studio output files. Then let us know what it says about the audio component -- or take a screen shot and upload it here, please.

I ran one of the Studio output files in GSpot. Attached is a screenshot.

OK -- thanks. That shows that the .mov option in Studio produces video with Little Endian audio -- as happened in my own experiment. The curious thing I noted, though, was that your video uses a frame rate of 23.976 fps (or 24 fps). This is the "cinematic" frame rate, which VS can obviously handle, since you get the video to play. But I am wondering if you have installed the latest version of QuickTime (which governs the .mov extension)? Some people have difficulty using the latest version and need to install an older version (7.5.5 seems to work) to get it to perform correctly with VS. That could be a problem, though, if you have Apple i-devices which require the latest version of QT in order for i-Tunes to work properly.

Sorry if I'm being dense but; did we discover a solution to this problem? I'm having the same issue.

Thanks!

Since MNsurfer has not come back, we don't know if he found any solution, such as through the Quicktime reversion I suggester or anything else.

My own suggestion, if you are having a similar problem to his, is that you don't use GoPro's Studio to convert the original mp4 which VS can handle direct from the camera -- and edit it excellently, I might add!
