New laptop - OS Win8 64 - I just loaded VS Ultimate X6 and SP1 and immediately none of my other applications will recognize/play my MPEG video files. Before I installed X6 Win Media Player and Real Player would recognize and play these files. Now, Real Player only plays the audio and Win Media Player recognizes these files as audio/music files. I removed and re-installed Real Player but it still fails. I don't want to have to use VS Ultimate X6 to view simple video files.
Anyone else have this problem? Has X6 somehow disabled other video viewing applications?
Thank You
Jimmy

Unfortunately many programs do this - they hijack the "file associations" because they think that everyone wants to use their program
Simply re-associate the file types with the player you want to use. Using Windows Explorer, right click on a media file and then select Open With and follow the instructions.

Re: Installed VS X6 Now Other Apps Wont Play MPEGs
Thank for the suggestion - I've tried that - whether the MPEG file is on my HDD or on a disc I've tried selecting a MPEG file - then a right click and then "play using" or "open using" and regardless of the program I select it only sees the file as audio and won't display the associated video but, of course, if I open the file in VStudio it plays perfectly.
I have a cloned HDDrive as a safety backup without VS X6 and when I swap out my H.Drives the other applications play the video files okay so it seems that loading Video Studio has done some mischief.

What kind of mpegs are we talking about? Please right click on one of the files in the VS timeline or library window, and copy ALL its Properties here please, or take a screen grab of the Properties box and upload it here.
It does sound strange, though -- and I would have thought others would be reporting the same thing; only, they aren't...

Re: Installed VS X6 Now Other Apps Wont Play MPEGs
HI Ken,
Here is the information you asked for - while in VS I right clicked on a sample video file and the basic information shown is:
File Format
MPEG2
Video
Video Type MPEG-2
Attributes 24 bits, 720X480, 4:3
Frame Rate 29.970 frames/sec
Data Rate Variable
Audio
Audio Type MPEG Audio Layer 2 Files
I recall that I originally captured from old Betamax II home movies using an ATI Video Card with a capture dongle - simple NTSC video/audio Capture as MPEG-2. I think I even used ULead Video Studio 6 as the capture application (this was years ago) - some edited and then rendered back out as MPEG-2 - some "raw" both types I am trying to play on Win Media Player and Real Player. I have a high end DVD player with mpeg capability and even it plays these files.
I would love an answer/solution that explains I'm suffering from cockpit trouble - surprised me that I could delete and re-install Real Player and still have a failure - since my last post I tried opening files using a Toshiba provided media player with no luck.
Thanks
Jimmy

Re: Installed VS X6 Now Other Apps Wont Play MPEGs
Those are absolutely rock standard mpeg-2 properties and I have no idea at all why other programs won't play them. My only thought is that it could have something to do with Windows 8, but we have quite a few users now with Win 8/8.1 who have not reported such a problem.
Do you by any chance have an account with a service like Dropbox where you can upload a short sample of one of the files so that we can play around with it? If not, if you have an FTP server program (like the free Filezilla), you could upload it to the following: ftp://twcfs.corel.com/

Re: Installed VS X6 Now Other Apps Wont Play MPEGs
Well it's not a Win8 specific issue. After reading your post, I checked several of my old MPEG-2 files, that were created in the same manner, imported DV. I don't have Real Player on my Win8.1 machine, however all the rest, including Windows Media Player did not have a problem with them.

Re: Installed VS X6 Now Other Apps Wont Play MPEGs
So ooremay, can you upload a problem file as Ken has asked?
I strictly use VLC for playing media and have had very few problems playing any kind of media files. Have you tried that? I dumped RealPlayer a long time ago as it created all sorts of problems with other "media" programs

Re: Installed VS X6 Now Other Apps Wont Play MPEGs
I too dumped Real a long time ago from all my computers -- found it just too "invasive"...
